Had the elk at 50. Too many cows in the way for a shot at a bull. Theu ended up moving onto private. Glassing for deer now.

Here's a picture from my phone. Will post some from my camera tonight.

Snuck to 50 on a bedded buck. Very nice 4x4. Fed out into the open where I cannot stalk him. Sitting on a group of does now about 100 yards. Feeding on private but were bedded on public. Hope they come back

They ended up continuing on to private. Home now, here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Buck I passed up on, 4x4 pushing 110" or so. Would have been my biggest bow buck to date. Kinda kicking myself in the *** right now, lol.

High of 50 tomorrow. Going to sneak out again after work and try to track down a few deer.

Heading back out. only 34 degrees!

Have been somewhat dejected over the past few hunts, been blowing a lot of stalks and just getting more upset than I should. I am over thinking this game. Taking a step back into the basics tonight and working on my patience, which is virtually non existent. Going to set up in an area the deer cross through to their nightly feeding area. 4 hours of sitting, I can do that... I think:tu:

All situated now. Sitting below a knob on a ridge on the edge of a powerline clearing. The deer cross through here often. Have an old road bed below me at 30 littered with fresh deer and elk sign.

No live updates tonight. Got caught in a big snow storm that cut hearing and sight to nothing. But, I was miserably happy. My natural ground blind worked too well, in a sense. During the storm a group of 6-7 does walked up 5 yards behind me, no shot!

I did not kill anything tonight but still feel it was a success. I have been feeling "pressured" lately as if I needed to kill something. The theme for tonight hunt was SIMPLE. I needed to step back and really enjoy the process of the hunt. I found a nice spot, kicked back and enjoyed what that area had to offer. I had highly desirable inclimate weather and was into the animals. Perfect.

Back at it again tomorrow to try another go at it.

That's awesome, whatever you harvest is definitely earned and a huge accomplishment. Can't wait to hear and see how it all goes down.

Great pics! How many bulls were in that elk herd? I don't know much about elk but figure that there are usually more than one bull, maybe? Nice buck you passed...had a gut on him!

Only two legal bulls and about 60 cows/spikes. This time of the year the bigger bulls will move into the highcountry while the small bulls will stay with the cows.

Question for you. Have you noticed a difference in success while wearing your ghillie suit vs not? Success being defined as deer in shooting distance/position and not necessarily getting shot opportunities. Last night was the first time in a long time I had much success just sitting on the ground, I generally spot and stalk. Fell in love with it all over!

Well, I'll put it this way. I have NOT been successful as far as killing a deer while wearing my ghillie suit but have had several close encounters. I had a buck come right up on me last season while he was searching for a doe. I mean he came really close and I was just resting/scanning and waiting to make my next move. Really wasn't setup in a good spot to successfully draw back on him.

I've successfully stalked to within 25 yards of a bedded buck but I just took too long and he decided to get up and walk away. He never spooked...it just took me a while to get to him.

I've gotten very close to some does but would have been shooting uphill with no backstop. I've only hunted a handul of times in it but I do enjoy the hell out of it. The simplest things can make my hunt better than even having deer in range. Last week I had a big fox squirrel come within 1 foot of me....it was one of the coolest things I've witnessed in my ghillie. Birds land on branches right at my face, mice climb on my boots, etc.

I'm getting a little impatient though. Back in Nov 2010, I killed a nice 8 on the ground in my regular hunting clothes and now that I'm more prepared, I have not had an oppurtunity. It will come though, I just need to dedicate more time to it.

Don't know if you're interested but I bought my suit from Rancho Safari.

Awesome Pics and love the "never stop pushing." How many are usually in a herd and how big of an area will that herd cover?

Thanks! That is a unusually large herd for the area. We typically see herds of 5-10 cows with a satelite bull or two.
