Just gone done vacuum sealing 15#'s of salami from my spring bear. Hunting snack food! Rain has finally quit but we are looking at 30 mph wind gusts. Supposed to clear off tomorrow so the odds of getting out are very high!
It's actually a very good meat, very mild, greasier than deer. Doesn't taste much different in salami form though. Usually any and all of our bear meat will get ground up but I do like to sneak a roast or steaks. Biggest concern, as with any omnivore/carnivore, is Trichinosis. The meat has to thoroughly cooked. I have heard the Alaskan bears killed in the berry fields will sometimes take on a sweeter taste to the meat, I would like to try it. Perhaps Trevor could chime in on that, or Rob (if he still hung around). I wish there was a G2G out west, I'd love to bring some for everyone. Perhaps I can work out something on the shipping end with someone
I got to eat some bear meat that my dad and brother brought home from a hunt in Idaho. I actually thought it was pretty tasty, but others didn't like it so much. I was very surprised to learn that the guides they had said that they never keep any of the meat. When my dad and brother asked to keep some of the meat the guides told them that those were the first bears in like 4-5 years that any client wanted the meat off of. I had always heard bear was good and was shocked to learn that people would just let it lay there and rot when it is fine to eat.
I may be wrong but IIRC in Idaho you did not have to keep any meat on a carnivore for a very long time. Now they require you to keep the meat minus rib and neck meat. I may have some dyslexia going on though. Its one way or the other
No hunt for me today. Ended up getting stuck on a rather large project at work and did not get out until late. Tomorrow should be a go!
Heading out. High of 50's today with rain forcasted for the duration. I'm going to get wet. I have a 4 day bull only elk hunt that starts today. Problem being, there is about 75 elk and 2 legal bulls, the odds are definitely stacked against me but i'll give them hell. The property is also loaded with deer including some nice, maybe I will get a crack at them as well. More updates to come! Here is a quote from the movie "300" that always gets me going "Give them nothing, but take from them everything!"
No elk yet, lots and lots of deer. Found one buck I really like. Not in a good position for a stalk right now, though. Going to go check a heavier forested side if property to see if the elk ate there Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Just got back a little while ago. Huge windstorm blew in. Had a large tree fall no more than 10' from me! If all of this blows over I will be back out this afternoon.
heading back out again. when is still here, but the rain clouds have moved out. will keep you all updated! Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Just watched a really nice ten didg a doe for about 10 minutes. No chance for a stalk Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

Back now. Ended up blowing a stalk on a doe. Not sure what happened, had great wind and cover. She was feeding one second then snorting and gone the next. Weird. May take my wife out tomorrow. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Officially eclipsed the 100 mile mark last night. That means I am over 130 hours and 100 miles with nothing dead yet, going to be one of those years. I had a fairly easy season last year but already have a feeling I am going to have to work for this one. Saw some good rutting activity that I am hoping to act on today. Found a few places I could possibly set a stand, but thats just not my style I want to kill a mature buck off the ground this year! Heading out in about an hour or so. Will keep you all posted. Good luck to anyone else making it out.
