I'm back shooting again after 10+ years away. I have a 17 year old Myles Keller bow, Easton Aluminum arrows and equally old broadheads. I took my bow into the low pro shop today and was astounded at the changes. Carbon fiber, expensive releases, a wall of different sights and rests...very overwhelming. And guys looking at and carrying around $800 to $1,200 bows. I discovered that my 17 year old string needs replacing. Ha, never even thought of that. I want to get back into the sport without spending a ton of money as they said my bow was old, but looked in good shape. What I'd really like to do is be able to swap out my old peep, and put on a new rest and sight. Does that makes sense? Also, my arrows are in pretty good shape. Should the shop be able to match them for weight and draw weight so I can pick up another dozen and still have them fly like my older( good shape) arrows? Added in edit: Should have asked this - If I get back to bowhunting and discover I need to upgrade my equipment, can you buy a good compound without spending the big bucks? Thanks
Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. Buy good accessories as you can and should you decide to or feel the need everything will switch over to a new bow. Most top of the line bows are going to be $600 plus. You don't necessarily need one, but need usually has little to do with what we buy in life. Another thing, I can't believe any string stayed on a bow for that long!!! I've had them blow apart just hanging on a rack with not near that much age on them. I think I'd frame them and give them the respect they deserve! Dan
I never gave the string a second thought. Put the bow away in a bow case over 10 years ago, and took it out and shot about 15-20 arrows a few days ago. The shop told me I should change a string about every 5 years ! Had an old recurve blow up on my when I was a kid. The tip delaminated and the string whipped my cheek and arm leaving a bloody welt. I imagine a compound bow would be more serious.
IMHO I would never leave a string on over 3 years even if it wasn't shot much and if it was I'd change it sooner. A new string is very cheap insurance over what can happen. If you ever see a string let go it will stick in your mind Dan
If you want a newer bow there are always some good deals on here, ebay, or craigslist. You can get a good used one for under $600.
Yes you can get a new bow for very low prices. Hoyt has bows from 300 to 500 and then you have mission archery you can get a bow for cheap to I was goin to get my girlfriend one and it was 200 at my pro shop it goes from 18 to 30 inch draw length. I have a 2005 bow that I might sale if I feel that my friends don't use it enough. If you would like me to let you know if I am I will just let me know. Good luck
With the amount of guys getting the latest and greatest out there, it creates a heck of a nice used bow market. There's also a fair amount of good "starter" bows out there that one can get with accessories for under 4 o 5 hundred bucks. It's all in what you want to pay.
You dont have to get new stuff....if you killed deer 15years ago with it you sure can kill them now right? =] But if you feel like you want a new bow just becasue check EBAY best place to get a used bow for cheap Get them for half the price in the shop Good luck
Various forum's classified sections are great too. Here, ArcheryTalk.com, etc all have bows and accs for sale at good prices.
I would check out stores like Cabelas and BassPro. If you're not concerned with having the latest and greates, you can find a ready to shoot kit for probably $350. I know my girlfriends dad shot a '92 XI up until this past season. He went to a BP and bought a Bear package that came with a sight, whisker biscuit, stabilizer, quiver, and I think 6 arrows for around $400.
Congrats man on being back it good to have another bowhunter added to the roster and you got another into it very nice man good luck in the future post some pics
My Xi is the 'Impact'. I have a dry basement, very long. Set up a target bag and shooting indoors. The only problem is that I shot too much the other day and my shoulder is sore. One of the reasons I might be looking for another bow is to give this one to my son. I see what looks like good deals on the internet and discount stores but I don't know jack about fitting myself for a bow, selecting arrows to match and the local shop, though expensive offers it all, including liftime bow tuning.
