So I was at my local shop, amazing group of guys (Cutting Edge, Greensburg, IN), to get some work done on a backup bow and some arrows fixed. Well I got to talking about back tension releases and one of the guys said he had a couple and would make me a great deal on it and kind of showed me how to do it. Well I got home and immediately went to my range (couldn't shoot there, had my girls with me, 2 2 year olds can be quite mischievious). After some getting used to it, I got the mechanics of it worked out. Pointers: 1. Do not use it as a trigger, you'll only lose arrows. 2. Make sure you point your bow slightly towards the ground when you draw. Eventually you won't have to do this, but when starting out... just do it. Now, the shooting: I got comfortable enough with the release to start practicing with my z7x. What i noticed was that after it released, the bow would flip left. This isn't something i experience with my normal release. When switching back to my every day release, the bow remained straight through and after the shot. I guess my question is this due to something I'm doing wrong in my form, or is it that I'm not yet used to this release and still have a "flinch"? Is the release trying to teach me something? Also, I know I need to work on keeping the pin on target better, there's too much wondering. Mind you, I can shoot and group extremely well, but there's always room for improvements in my opinion. I never punched the trigger or did the "now" when shooting. The jury is still out on this.
The draw length may be too long for you with that release. Try closing your stance and concentrate on getting your "push-pull" in a straight line with the target. When you over push the bow it will pop to the left for a right handed shooter. Are you using a Stan release?
Hey Greg, Thanks for the reply. The release is a tru-ball BT. When I shoot I my left arm is still relaxed as though it is with my trigger release. It's kind of hard to explain, I think it's more of a flinch than it is a pushing because the bow has too long of draw. I'll play with it more tonight as it's supposed to be nice out today and take what you said into consideration and see if I can give you more info.
