Shot a buck last night at John's (jmbuckhunter's) place...

I was back at the trailer waiting for him and when he walked up, I asked "Ever shot and wished you had that arrow back?" :(

I TREMENDOUSLY enjoyed the fellowship with John, and words can't express how gracious John is in opening up his incredible property and having a few friends in... I simply jumped the gun in shooting this guy though.

I had seen a very nice mature shooter come out earlier, and I tried to rattle him back, and mixed in a series of grunts and estrous doe can calls... Four bucks showed up looking for the action, and this guy's body was MUCH bigger than the rest, including some very nice 2 1/2-year-olds... I got caught up too much in body size instead of rack size (we weighed him on digital scales later at 222).

Oh well. What's done is done. He'll be appreciated by our family come dinner time; that's for sure. And I wouldn't trade the time hunting with John for anything...

John went back out this morning and brought back breakfast to go with him ...

Thanks again, John... call me when you shoot his Daddy! :)

    Sounds like a great time!

John is a tremendous person with a special place. I'm not sure I've been on a small property that "hunts bigger" then his.

That is a heck of a buck Greg! I don't know where you hunt, but I would be tickled to death to even see a buck like that personally. Congratulations to you.

I don't think John was upset; he made a similar "mistake" last year himself... Besides, John is MUCH too awesome of a guy and a true gentleman to ever say otherwise. It's just that -- heck, it's sorta hard to explain, given the fact that there's such a diverse population on here where some indeed would consider this guy a true trophy ...

I'm sure many on here regularly pass button bucks and spikes... think of it that way for us. This guy should have garnered a pass from me, and I just got caught up in the moment of having bucks coming from all directions, thinking about the occasion, just everything...

Nice buck Greg...nothing to be ashamed of there, that's for sure. I agree with Brett...I'd love to even lay eyes on one like that! Nice rack and 222 is a hog! I understand what you are saying though, size is relative to where you are hunting. That would be a mega slammer where I am, not as much out there. Good job regardless!

I saw an 8-pointer very similar to that on Saturday morning and he put on a show for me doing ground scrapes and ended up jumping the fence about 5 yards down the fenceline from me. Congrats on the buck! Ground shrinkage sucks, but he's definitely a buck to be proud of.

Greg, congrats on the nice buck! I hate hearing the regret in your post, but I have been there when I have mistakenly shot a 7 month old ..... I sure hope I make such a mistake as THAT buck ;)
