Im taking my boy in on Saturday and he'll be carrying the 20 gauge but I always pack my bow just incase. We have had some cold weather the past week or so, so hoping that really gets them hitting the food plot and the feeder. I checked the cameras the other day and had a new buck show up that I would probably take. My one target buck is still on the cameras but he is due to shed in a week or so. Might take a shot at the new one.
Well humble pie got served up nice and cold last night. I for the first time in a while raised a gun on a deer, muzzleloader. I am betting it was a combination of filming but also the fact guns are such an advantage I rush the shot more than I would have with a bow. I plum just missed her at around 50-55 yards. Slowing down footage my guess is I shot right over her back just behind her neck (quartering away). Bullet impact site in field was clean of hair and blood....we followed her after waiting over an hour through the field and snow for 200 yards....not a spec of blood. Where she stopped at the edge of the field...no blood. Only positive was a clean miss....otherwise so mad I actually busted a flashlight of mine LOL (but not funny). Between this year of no really good bucks, losing late season hunting on a property we invested a brassica plot in, the property I was on last night being ramsacked with activity (four wheelers and such) it has been rough....2017 is a season to remember but not for good reasons that is for sure.
We all have off years sometimes TY.. Keep your head up. Its not over yet! I saw a big buck chasing a doe just last night on my way home for work. They are still out there!
No doubt....I literally went between anger and laughing....I'd have most likely smoked her with a bow more likely than a gun LOL. I really need the same slow down talk through process I do with a bow with a gun. Just a small thing I plan on doing prior to next season...missing that close of a shot is just unacceptable. Be like missing a 12 yard bow shot. I am unable to hunt till after Sunday...so that property should hopefully settle back down (HOPEFULLY). I have been waiting for a N or NW wind to hunt food at my property and this screwy weather isn't giving me either for weeks now and only one is predicted next week. Crazy!
Knews keeps getting worse.....Pops went out to the property I missed the doe on and discovered the entire woods were turned into a dirt track by the grandson of the owner.....through food plot edges, up near bedding and through every opening in it.....seems this isn't the first time too from what we learned, just first since snow fall so very obvious. We stay out of the woods middle and bedding the entire year............2017 season needs to be done.
Scored today on this buck--- I've been chasing him for a couple years at the family farm. I've not put a tape to him, but I think he will be in the mid forties. What you guys think?
Congratulations on the awesome buck! Must feel pretty good putting one down that you have history with. Do you have any other pics from different angles? Hard to judge the score from that angle but I'm throwing out low 140s. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Thanks Neb.... Got some other angles, but he ended up going 152 and change... Gonna make a nice Euro mount for the wall.
Haven't been out at all guys have lots of does and couple small bucks on cams maybe this huge cold front coming in will get em moving. Have been doing some good fishing tho
I know it is getting towards the end of Archery season for everybody. I hope everybody had a good Christmas and want to wish everybody a Happy New Year. I want to thank everybody for there stories and camaraderie and getting to know you guys better.
Happy New Year everyone. Stay safe out there tonight if you're traveling! Spent my day doing a DIY euro on my buck from this year. Really happy with it so far. Still need to whiten, seal and mount it. Turned out great for my first try.
I've been out getting after some more coyotes here this winter These three were within the past week! Saving some future Fawns or so I hope!!
Well fellas....this insanely cold temps has kept me in all but a couple times with a gun....did miss a doe in ML (still astonished how).... I will however be out Sunday night with a bow and may slip out tomorrow morning in the bitter cold for a morning hunt yet as well. Mature doe is fair game for sure. Galen congrats man, yote hunting sounds like a blast!
Monday there is a warm up headed my way, i'm hoping to make it out then, plus Christmas Eve our furnace $hit the bed, and the new one was up and running yesterday 1/4/18 single degrees - warm up to 32 good thing we have a wood stove furnace inside the house and a back up hot water tank Hot water heat. Fuel OIL switched to propane. The storm in ERIE, Pa. kept the heating and plumping guy from getting any supplies to install the new furnace. ERIE, is 30 miles away and they received over 6 feet of snow. We only received 12 - 20 inches of snow.
