For general use for food plots etc, what would most recommend, a 4 wheeler like ATV or something like a Ranger etc? What size is big enough to do disc work, planting etc. Never owned one, but would like something powerful and versatile enough. Any brands to stay away from or strongly consider? Must have add-ons? All and any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Really depends on your budget and how much ground you are planning to till up. I have been using a 500cc quad for a few years now, but will be looking to upgrade to a Polaris Ranger in the future. If money were no object, I would already have a compact tractor with three point hitch capability. I plan 5 to 7 acres per year with my current setup.

I would recomend a small tractor as well. You will pay a little more but as far as working ground it would most likely be the best depending on soil type. You will have better quality attatchments for a tractor and they will get alot more done without making you frustrated. Down side to tractors is the price.

If you go for an ATV or UTV I would stay away from anything smaller than 450 cc and if at all possible get something in the 700 cc range. I would look at the Polaris Ranger or Yamaha Rhino both make good bikes

I bought a Yamaha Rhino 450 last fall and love it. I think it would be great for smaller food plots. For what I need .... hauling wood, pulling a trailer, getting rocks off the trails etc, it works better for me than an ATV. However, here in Wis, they aren't legal for use on the trails.... yet.

The Rhino's are a bit smaller and more narrow than the Ranger's making them a bit more manuverable. If I were to buy another one, I'd get the 700.

I would recommend the small tractor as well if possble. I use JD 990 to plow/dragg, and my atv (Big Bear 350) to spread lime/seed/fert).

Thanks for the help guys. Anyone know of any good websites for used ones? Haven't been able to find anything in local classifieds or craigslist. I'm thinking of going with a UTV for some of the versatility. I can use it for goose and duck hunting as well. But definitely something over 700 cc's, eh? I agree that a tractor would be nice, but difficult for me to store as I don't live on a parcel of land. I could fit a quad in the 3rd car garage without much problem. Anybody know about rentals?

Check with a local farmer about paying him to put in food plots for you. I hire a guy to work some ground for me, he charges $100 to chop, disc, and plant my small food plot. Much cheaper for me than buying equipment, maintenence, etc.

We do have a 400cc ATV, and if I were using one for plots, I'd get at least a 500cc.

For the price of a Ranger or large ATV you can buy a decent tractor that will provide a lot more versatility and function. I have tried both and favor the tractor by far. More horsepower and more options for attachments etc. If you are serious about plots and have several acres to deal with I would strongly recommend a tractor. You just cant plow and work up our heavy soils with anything less than a tractor. In very light, sandy soils, you might get by with a UTV or ATV. Small tractors are quite inexpensive if you look around. Check out: www.tractorhouse.com
