So I just purchased a 2012 Polaris Sportsman 550 (Pick it up on Monday) and will be keeping it up North at the family cabin for a number of different uses including mowing. I am now looking for a finishing mower but haven't had much luck finding one. Does anyone use an ATV to mow? Through Polaris I can get a trail mower that does a "rough cut" but I am not sure if this will do a good enough job on normal grass. This is new to me so... suggestions?
I had the rough cut it actually did a better job then the finish mower I have now. Both of them were Swisher brands bought at Fleet farm but you can get them at Northern Tool. I depends on how often you mow and how thick the weeds get. My yard was a pasture at one point so it is thick with everything but grass. I have about 3 acres I cut about every three weeks, which makes it tough on the finish mower but was easy on the rough cut. If I would by another one i would get the rough cut again.
I had a swisher rough cut mower and it did fine for tall knee high grass, If you are wanting a nice smooth finish like a normal riding mower produces I would go with a finishing mower. A friend uses one and it does a great job. I bought mine at Tractor supply. I used to work at a polaris dealership and if I remember right the mowers are over-priced. You would be better off going to your local LOWES, Tractor Supply or whatever to get one.
I'd say go with the Swisher trail cutter(ours are older models now but they went down to about a 3 inch cut and up to around 7 inches)...with the larger engine(keeping up the blade speed in thicker grass) and with sharp blades you should be happy with the cut unless you want it like a golf course fairway and don't have any worries about sticks and rocks. Also sounds like you won't be cutting this once a week so a finishing mower(the Swisher trail mower only goes up to max of 4 inches) going through knee high or more growth is going to bend over the grass and leave a less than finished cut anyway. Northern Tool is a good place to find a good price on them as previously stated.
You should buy my swiser finish mower. Going to be putting it on the market next week Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
This isn't going to be a pristine yard and there is a lot of area to cover. There is also a lot of uneven ground and slopes that I'd rather not deal with on a riding mower.
