How effective are these? I am thinking about renting one this weekend for around $40. My area is a tad larger than 1/3 of an acre, that has never been worked before. Roughly how long should this take me?
Some will say they have not had good luck with them. Others will say they are very useful on smaller plots like you are talking about. I think there are many variables to determine how effective they are. 1. What kind of disc is it and how much does it weigh? 2. What are your soils? 3. Is the vegetation either sprayed and killed or burnt off? If you try and just disc up heavy weeds or grasses it probably won't work well 4. How many rocks, roots, are in the field? 5. How flat is it? 6. What are you planting? I think the key to using an ATV disc is to understand that weight is your friend and that the field needs to have the grass weeds dead or removed before you try.
Brad is right on the money. If there's still vegetation growing, you're not going to get very good results. You would have to weigh it down more than an ATV would be able to pull. Good luck and let us know how it works out. Looking forward to pics of the plot
REar tine tiller takes longer but depending on vegetation will treat you nicer. It's how we do all of our small plots
If you haven't sprayed Round-Up or something else it would be a chore to get the ground broken up with a small disc like that. Spray first, wait a couple weeks then give it a go.
Yes, the area has been burned. I have a front tine tiller, that would get the job done, but it would be a pain
Well for $40 give it a try and be prepared to add weight if necessary. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I built a flip over disk for behind my 500 sportsman HO, it's 54 inches wide and would work up a 1/3 acre food plot in around 20 minutes, that would be me covering it twice. I put in almost five acres of plots with it annually! Just pay attention to your quad you don't want to over heat it, run in 4 low. and don't be afraid to let it cool down if it warms up.
We've actually broken ground with an Antler King Sodbuster disc a few times. If you burned, you're good to go. What we normally did was pick a new location, weed whack it as close to the ground as possible, remove all the vegetation from the plot and then start discing. The key is to drive in tight circles over and over again. It takes a little bit, but once you start to loosen it up it works pretty well. Also, it helps if the ground is a bit wet and soft. We did this on clay, which is hard to break through. Oh, if you're going to get a tractor, you may as well get something you can actually do some work with. Kidding! I wish I had one the size of PT's as well. It would work great for food plots. Mine is too big to get into most of our food plots.
Yep! I'm planting about 50 acres in vegetables and deer food this year. Its 83hp and works well in the fields for what I need to do now. Plus, its a business expense. :D Like I said, I wish I had one your size too. We have a 42hp Ford as well, but its a little too big to get into some of our plots as well. So, we'll stick to the ATV disc for those plots.
We actually bought it used. Its a 2009 and only had 175 hours on it. Paid less then what a new one would have been without the loader on the front. I've put about 85 hours on it this spring, and I haven't even been able to get to the cabin to do the fields for the deer because its been too wet.
