im sitting here in my barracks and going over all my camo awaiting opening day of firearm season in upstate new york(i know this is a bow hunting site, but keep reading anyway) and i got to thinking. my father in law likes to "prepare" his camo(he said it, not me) by gathering all kinds of leaves, limbs, bark and dirt that he can find around where hes going to hunt, then place it all in a tote(the plastic kind for putting clothes in). he then puts his camo into it and covers that with more gatherings. do you guys do any kind of "strange" stuff like that? or do you just use scent masking stuff and call it good?
I don't think it is strange at all. I don't do that but it makes sense to me. I just use scent eliminating soap and dry my clothes outside hanging.
I do that a little bit. I just take spruce tree bows and stick them in my camo container. I also spray down all my clothes.
thats why i put the quotation marks around strange. i dont think its far fetched at all, and it makes some sense to me. what i should have added was since i live in the barracks full time in new jersey, and my hunting is done in upstate new york, im kinda looking for something i can do here in my room and still pass a room inspection. i dont think my commander would like seeing a tote full of "garbage" in my room.
It's scent control and those of us that need to get up close and personal are more concerned with scent then a lot of other things. I know a lot of rifle hunters don't worry about it but why not give yourself every advantage.
my father in law is both a die hard bow hunter, and muzzle loader hunter. so i guess thats one of the reasons. im just now getting into archery, although i bought my first bow(a martin archery wildcat 60#) about 2 or 2.5 years ago to give me something to play with, then about 6 months ago i picked up a second bow(bear archery grizzly 55#). at the time i just wanted to do target shooting, but i havent really gotten a chance to practice all that much. living in a city in new jersey, theres not a whole lot of places to shoot them. but my father in law is pushing me to get my bow hunter ed course done so i can go with him. so im starting to focus on scent control more and more because of it. it used to be wake up and douse myself in scent control spray and head for the woods. now its got to be a whole lifestyle change about 2 weeks out. im really likeing this website, all kinds of info and knowledge floating around. thanks for your input guys.
