this move makes no sense to me whatsoever. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...re-moving-carlos-zambrano-to-the-pen.html.php Has he been THAT bad? Admittedly, I haven't seen him pitch this season.
He was absolutely terrible his first two outings. He gave up something like 8 runs in 1 and 1/3 inning on the opener and I can't remember how many he gave up his second start, but he only made it something like 4 innings. His last start he looked like his old self. I can't for the life of me figure it out either. Clearing up room for Ted Lilly? Like that is any better. I think the Cubs were hoping Samardzija was going to be better as a set up man and it doesn't seem to be the case.
I could not believe it when I heard it. I figure with his hot head he is not an ideal set up man...but we will see. He has a tendancy to be wild from time to time. He also leaves alot of runners out there when given the time to work through it (as a starter), he will not have those same luxuries as a middle man. We will see.
They should've got rid of Z several years ago instead of signing him to a huge contract like they did. He's a great pitcher on his good days, and a horrible pitcher on his off days, making him average at best. He hasn't put together a really solid season in quite awhile, and his volatility on the mound can change the entire game in the span of a few pitches. Lilly has been consistant and one of the best starters for the Cubs the past several years. With Dempster, Silva, and Wells all pitching very well this spring it only makes sense. Z is 1-2 with an ERA in the 7's. Using him as a setup guy, which we need badly due to our crappy relief pitching as of late, could be a good move until we find a setup guy who can actually do the job. Hopefully by then Z will be back in good form and can move into the rotation. If not, at least he'll probably be gone next year.
