I am currently shooting a gold tip xt hunter 5575 with a .400 spine. I am wanting to go to a gold tip velocity hunter with a .413 spine. My bow is a 28.5 draw length set on 70 lb draw. I am wanting to pick up a touch more speed and when season gets here I will go down to about 60 lb draw. Is this spine safe for me to swap over to? The first arrow is 8.4 grains per inch and the second will be 7.4 gpi
You will be fine with that but don't go any higher on spine, atleast until you shoot 60 pounds but even then I wouldn't.
Yeah that's right but becareful looking at numbers. Sometimes company like Carbon Express tend to put 250 on the shaft but its not a 250 spine. It's actually a higher spine. Whenever buying new arrows definately go by the chart.
It's going to depend on the arrow length. If your arrows are 29" It would be safer to run a 350 Then you could use them at 60-70#. Don't think I would use a .400 or .413 if you decide to go back to 70#
It's better to go slightly stiff for shooting broadheads and you definitely don't want it on the weak side. If you're going off a chart and are on the edge between two spine weights, pick the stiffer spine (lower deflection rating). You may have to shift to a totally different shaft to get one in the right spine and at the weight (gpi) you want. A lot of this conjecture depends on your bow though. For instance; I found that the 2009-2010 Elites like a spine a little on the weak side.
I bought a carbon express 250 blue streak today. It weighs out at 341 where my gold tips weighed out at 369. Dont know yet how that translates into fps but will chrony them soon. they seem to almost hit in the same spots from 20 to 40 yards. Would a drop away rest help me pick up any speeds?
Several factors come into play on speed and what spine you should use. A drop away COULD help your speed but then again, shooting blazers COULD too! That doesn't guarantee anything. Everyone screams speed but force kills. Refer back to the pebble and the rock. Why not lose 5 fps to gain a total pass through? Can you tell a difference in 5 fps? No. Can the Swamp Donkey at 20 yards opening day? No. Load some weight up brother and put it through a 350 engine block!
