I have some questions on arrow selection this is going to be my first bow hunting season i have been shooting for about 6 months now. I’m shooting a bear charge bow at 65#s and a 27” draw length. The first arrows I bought for the bow where beamin ISC hunter 400s cut to 28” they flew good but it was my first time shooting a bow and well I missed the target a lot while tuning my bow in and it seemed just about every time an arrow would hit something else besides the target they would splinter. And for 50 dollars a pack I figured I would just buy some cheaper arrows to learn with so I got some Easton fall stalker 2219s and I like them but im wondering if there to heavy for the bow im shooting because they do seem to drop a lot at further distances. Really im just wondering if im fine shooting these arrows or if I should look at other arrows I don’t care if there aluminum or carbon just looking for a strong arrow. I do notice that my fall stalkers stick into the target a lot further I guess that’s because there they have more weight behind them. And im not looking to spend 50 dollars on 6 arrows right now. Thanks for the help. I use a 100grain tip as well if that matters.
Hey Matt, good luck this season. Those 2219's spine out at .337 which is pretty stiff for your set-up. Do you think you could get heavier broadheads/field points, say in the 125-150 grain range? That should make the arrows fly a little straighter. And you are right, those arrows are heavy. OR, can you crank up your draw weight to 70 lbs? But don't worry, that extra weight is not going to make a darn worth a difference inside 25 yards or so in terms of dropping. Also, I understand about you banging up/losing your first batch of arrows, we have all done it!
i could go up to 70# draw weight i pull 65 very easy i just was waiting till the end of the season but if you think that would help them fly straighter that would be the thing to do. where did you find the info on the arrow spine i been trying to find info on the fall stalker 2219 arrows and cant seem to find anything at Easton website. ill most likely move up to a nicer arrow after this season but starting out i figured $50 per 6 was going to get expensive with how quickly i was losing and braking the arrows. where the beman 400 isc hunters too light for my set up?
The 400's were fine for your set-up, especially with the 100 grain head. Now that you have .337 spined arrows, you will need to up your tip weight and/or draw weight to make them fly better. Yes, I do believe that you pulling 70 pounds would help those arrows fly straighter. Don't worry about "nicer" arrows Matt. If your arrows fly straight and true, and have a razor sharp broadhead attached, they will kill. http://www.eastonarchery.com/pdf/selection_chart.pdf
If you're just looking to shoot 20 yards or so, walmart has some carbon express terminator and predator arrows that really aren't that bad at all. Most are .400 spine. That's what I started shooting with. Most are $5-7 a piece. I would still recommend getting nicer ones eventually though.
