I do a lot of shooting at Morley Field in San Diego where they have excelsior bales behind the targets. This morning an archer showed me how the new excelsior was wearing out his carbon arrows. He had several arrows with little bits of excelsior that had worked into little cracks in the carbon fiber. His arrows were starting to look like pipe stem cleaners. I am going to try shooting on a light coat of Elmer's Slide-All to the front half of some arrows, leaving other arrows untreated as a control. Do any forum members have any experience with this kind of wear or with any arrow lubes? Bob Riess, San Diego

Yes, carbon will wear. Aluminum, not so much as it is harder and smoother. With any carbon arrows, they need to be checked periodically, both for wear and cracks. Lube will help slow the process but arrows have a life span. It is pretty long though.
