Not to long ago I purchased myself an arrow saw and now I am getting ready to purchase some new arrows and put them together myself. My question is what type of glue do you guys use for the insert? Can I use the same glue I use for my fletching or do I need something different?
Not sure what you are using for your inserts, but I don't use the same for all. For fletching, I use Bohning Platinum.
That's what I use when fletching too. I've been doing that for a while but with my first go at putting in the inserts myself, I was curious what to use for them.
Sorry GA, I should read better. I have used Super glue gel for years and then switched over to impact tough gorilla super glue. There's alot out there to chose from.
I use hot melt on everything so that I can get them out again later if I want. You have to be a little more careful with carbons so you don't get them too hot but it works great. Definitely don't use fletching cement. The impact on the insert will shatter the glue and the insert will pull out. If you use 2 part epoxy make sure that it's slow set (12 hr.+) for the same reason; fast set is too brittle.
Yep, Rob summed it up perfectly. I've always used a two-part epoxy (the slow-set variety) but I'm about to start building my next batch with hot-melt glue. I recently purchased a little butane torch just for this purpose -- now I've just gotta get the glue. Anyone have any favorites in that arena?
I have tried a couple different kinds of hot melt glue and prefer bohning ferr-l-tite sticks. It dries hard but not brittle and it is the only one that doesn't weaken on hot days when shooting hot targets. http://www.bowhunting.com/shopping/Products/Ferr-l-tite-Cemnt-6-Gram-Stick__6512.aspx
IMO,and my friend that tunes arrows.Easton makes the absolute best.It is a real low temp hot melt and spreads evenly.
I may give it a try as your advice has always been very good but I have tried a different low temp hot melt and that is when I lost my BH and insert in my rinehart target. It was a hot day, the target was hot and the arrows were in the sun while I was shooting. I almost lost a field tip in a bag target too. That was why I switched to the bohning ferr-l-tite as it does not weaken on hot days. I suppose if you are not shooting much on the hot days it doesn't matter though.
I have never lost a point in a target when using hot melt.I have shot many tournaments in July and August in 90 deg weather. I melt a small ring aroung the shaft entry hole, then put a little on the insert and heat insert and rotate as I install.Served me well.
I have always been a Hot melt fan for inserts to. If you have trouble getting insert back out just find a long bolt that will fit the ID of the shft with the head cut off, insert it from knock side, lay out a crumpled up blanket, grab shaft on the knock end and whip it toward the blanket. A couple tries usually dislodges the insert.
