I still think the arguement can be made that shooting a 2.5 in some locations is the equivalent of shooting a 4.5 in others. (as he dashes behind cover after pouring the gasoline)
Maybe a better question would be....why are certain people here so concerned with the age of OTHER forum member's bucks to the point of wanting to argue about it?
I think that hunting is definitely full of personal choices based on each individuals circumstances but I also think that you see a lot of the "my way is better than your way mentality" where people say they don't care what others do but truthfully feel their way is far superior and anyone not doing it that way is not on their level. They may not come out and say it but it's there.
Life is a competition...agreed? We all like to bust each others balls and claim our glory, its part of the amercian males way of life. If not wed be a bunch of pansies. Why do we watch sports? Why do we still play softball into our 40's? And why do we try to shoot bigger bucks ever year? We do cuz we want to :D
No. If life were a competition us old guys would always be winning instead of helping you young guys .
I think you guys missed my original point. Do antelope hunters hold out for a 3.5 year old? Moose hunters? Turkey? Naw, the hunter has an idea in their mind what a shooter is.....age generally isn't an issue.
Generally... But whitetails are thee most pursued big game animal in America, and alot of guys are looking for that equalizer...
One thing I have learned lately is if you hunt in the mid-west and show a pic of a nice buck you killed...to avoid any trouble from some here who don't hunt in the mid-west...it's best you just say it was a 2.5 yr old buck regardless of it's true age. This is because everyone knows that all 2.5 yr old bucks in the mid-west are P&Y trophies...LMAO
Actually, a lot of turkey hunters around here do go by age. Has to be a 3 year old bird or older. Just adding another log to the fire. :D
I prefer to put my target on the age of the buck, not necessarily the size of it's rack. Last year during gun season I passed up an awesome looking 2 year old that would of went 120". Minutes later a 3 year old 8 pointer walked out and I didn't hesitate to take him. He only scored 113", but he was a shooter to me, where as the 2 year old wasn't. Just a personal preference IMO. It's the same type of argument as guys shooting little bucks compared to those passing them. You shoot what makes you happy, and I'll shoot what makes me happy.
Honestly most of the age talk I hear is on this site. Not many of the hunters I know around my area talk about it. However I'm alot like Germ in the fact that I find it all interesting and like to research/read about it.
I'm going to start going in reverse, I'm only going to try for 4 month old or younger deer. You know, the super late born fawns. They're harder to find than a 4 1/2, at least in my area!
