I apologize for not having a picture, but if you're seeing it, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

This year, the antlers are holding longer than normal. The weather in the northeast has been unseasonably mild, and they're just not feeling the stresses that would normally be exuded on the herd.

What I've found on several of my sheds this year is buildup of green, smelly, gelatinous material around the pedicle, just below the burr line.

My guess is that it's just part of the abscission layer, where the tissue holding the antler on has completely deteriorated, and even begun to decompose.

We've got at least 3-4 different sheds, from 3-4 different bucks where this green matter was evident. Maybe it's something slightly out of the ordinary. Maybe it's on there every year, and it's just taken me 5 years to notice.

Now, there's not much of it - just a couple tiny accumulations.

    Anybody?

I have only seen it once on a shed. The buck dropped it about mid Febuary so pretty much normal for the time of year. His other side was normal. The green puss was digusting and stunk very bad. Tyler found it and brought it over to show me. I grabbed it to take a look and he took off. I hollered at him to carry his own damn shed. He laughed and hollered back, " no it stinks too bad !! ".

I have no idea what causes them to be like that.

I'll keep an eye out to see if we find any sheds with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I seem to remember reading a few articles this year about shed hunting and the articles said that the loss of the smell of estrus starts the hormone to begin the shedding. So is it the weather or is it biology?

Same here but this last couple days in the 70's has them dropping like crazy. I have been out the past three days and have found 8 sheds with one day only walking a half hour and found two. Get out there and get them!

I only found one this year so far and it didn't have what your speaking of with green puss but the shed wasn't a clean break. I always found sheds with a smooth even break and the one I just found wasn't. looks like it could have hurt when it came off.
