Not worth it. Read the prep of the cooler ice days carefully. For anyone who pulls it down from the 120 degree attic and then puts in ice only to have it melt in 3 hours. On real tests that get the long ratings they cool them down first. Then they keep them in shade only. I have a Yeti. It is no better or no worse then mid range coolers. i won it, so I don't have any cost in it, but I would NEVER spend the 400 for it. I could by 4 igloo marine coolers in the same time to ever pay back the robust more robust hinges or drain plug. It's more a status symbol.

I've had my budget coolers side by side camping with Yetis. I would recommend two smaller Colman Extremes over a large Yeti and you will still have pile of money left over.

It's all about how you pack it and how often it is accessed. If you want your stuff to stay cooled as long as possible I would recommend at a minimum of bringing your cooler inside well before it is time to pack it. This will cool the interior down so the ice doesn't have too. You can even stick the cooler in coffin or a walk-in freezer. All items you are packing should be cold or frozen before you leave. Air space is not your friend. Fill the cooler to its maximum capacity.

Lastly, not all ice is equal. If the ice is partially melted when you pack your cooler don't expect good results. Get it from a place that has Commercial freezers if possible. Their freezers are much colder than at gas stations, your home, etc....

in all seriousness i talked to a farmer at a tire shop that had one in the bed of his truck. i asked him if was really worth the money and he said "if you use a cooler very much at all, yes" he went on about how his cheapo coolers would rattle around in the bed of his truck and break the insulation and wouldnt hold ice for a 12 hour work day. and finally spent the money on a yeti. he also said that he packs the cooler every day for work, keeps water and his lunch in it. before with old coolers he was putting a $5 bag of ice in it a day and when it really got in the 90s or higher he was putting 2 bags in. now if it stays 70 all week and he just opens it to pack it and for lunch it keeps ice for a week. he also had a cable and lock to go on it that attached to his bed so its "bear and buddy proof"

    sorry for the long comment

I am fortunate enough to do 4-8 day camping trips up north every couple weeks during the summer. We bring up two Yeti's (only one is mine). They are very nice and more durable and stable than you would think a cooler can be. There is two different uses for coolers and what you have to ask yourself is what are you planning on doing with the cooler? If you plan on opening it every 45 minutes to grab a drink out of it then the Yeti is not what you want. It does not matter how good a cooler holds ice, if you open it constantly it will need to cool itself down which requires ice melt. If you are going to use it for main food supply and only plan on opening it a few times during the day then you wont need to add ice anytime in the next 7-10 days. I just got back from a 6 day trip up north and still had plenty of ice in my cooler when I got home. My buddies we had to add ice to but his was used for drinks and snacks in the boat so we where opening it every 30 minutes.

I have an igloo extreme. I bought it at Sams club for about $75, it works great for my purposes.

By far, hands down the best cooler you could buy. Keeps ice in hot temps for about 5 days.

I could see if you were really, really tough on a cooler but, really how many people are that hard on them. Personally, I'm not. My Igloo as a handle and wheels and works just fine.

I realize this is an old thread but I'm bored today....

I have a Yeti 65 and an Engel 35. They are both great coolers. The engel seems to hold ice better and the yeti is a little better built. For 100 degree boating weather they both need to be cooled down prior to adding drinks etc. I place a frozen milk jug in mine the night before I plan on using it to lower the temp before adding ice.

Mine have not proven to hold ice more than 2-3 days in legitimate hot weather use. We use them on the boat and they are constantly being opened.

Are they worth the money? It depends... They definitely aren't $400 more superior at holding ice than say a marine igloo. However, they are tough as nails and will literally last a lifetime. That may be where you will find they are worth the money.

Has anyone's opinion about these changed in the last year. I didn't want to start a new post, so I thought I would bump this one.

I like other posters have the pleasure of going on 5-15 day long trips in the UP in Michigan. While it does not get scorching hot in the UP, it is a pain in the butt to drive out of the middle of no where to find ice. I love my Yetis. I have the 20qt for day fishing trips, and a 65 for camping. I've been out for 2 weeks and never had an issue with ice melt.....do I prep it, yes. A lot of people argue that you shouldn't have to do that, but Yeti does not hide this. It is in their instructions for "maximum ice retention." In addition, October can still be warm in Michigan. If I shoot an early season doe on a 4 day hunt, I never want to leave camp. If you quarter it, your deer is safe until you return home for processing.

I was wondering why that couldn't be done. Thanks for that! Kind of what I figured.

If I were to buy a $400 cooler that sob better be the size of my dang pickup bed....
I would build one before I spent that kind of money on a cooler...and this coming from a guy that could afford it.

That IRP looks interesting, never heard of them before.

NO...they may be durable and tough but Yeti is prime example of popular people who endorse a product only for that product to cost the everyday man a arm and a leg, no thank you, way to much $ for what plenty of other coolers will do.
