I'm surprised at how many compound shooters think trad is expensive.
I bought a bow for 465 with tax.Arrows online[carbons]for 45 and a tab for a dollar at a shop going out of business. So 500 bucks or so in my rig.Now a new compound that is decent but not top of the line or a beginers rig will be about 500-600.Now add arrows and all the acessories ,release and peep, sights,so on.It gets to be 1000 bucks give or take pretty quickly. So why do they think trad is expensive ? I'd say we are cheap.Yeah I know some trad bows cost 500-the sky is the limit. But I'm talking on average here.I can buy a custom string for my stickbow for 15-18 dollars, when my compound needs strings ans cables its 100 dollars plus pay to have them put on and buy new loop and peep.I think we're getting off pretty cheap.:d

Well, I agree and disagree. I think if you are going trad only, the $500 isn't a bad investment at all to be fully rigged and ready to hunt. But if you are a compound shooter that just want to experiment with trad, but you want a nice, quality bow, that $500 is a little harder to swallow.

    Hell, I've been wanting a 60s Super K, but I'm not gonna spend $300 on a 40yr old bow.

I agree.[sort of]but if you look around you can find a used bow for 150 or so.
If you're just testing the water 150 aint bad.Now what about a person just wanting to try bow shooting/hunting ? A compound will cost about 150 used also, untill you add all the other things then you got a lot more money in it. I've bought a lot of stickbows over the years. Some were really good ones but used some were new.I never got a real fancy one with all the expensive wood options that only add beauty and no performance though. I'm just thinking that in general that it seems to cost more to get into a compound. But like I said I may be wrong.:d

They both can be very expensive, or you can get decent deals and still have quality stuff.
I think the biggest thing is trad gear is that its more expensive than most people expected.

Okay, lets look at the overall picture.Lets add maintnance to the equation, example:cost of a stringer versus a bow press ? Forgive me I'm not trying to argue here, just thinking on the keyboard.

    Achillies,

I agree with your point that getting started in compounds is probably more expensive, my point was that neither one of them are cheap!

Please don't let me get addicted to buying and selling bows again, please!! lol

I've done some things that I would be embarrased to even talk about! But damn they are fun to look at and by god I want to try them all! lol

I think just getting started out in this, its a bit expensive, like Rybo said, more expensive that people think! Now that I'm a bit more established I know what I need and what I don't need! Take making a wood arrow for example. You buy the bare shaft, taper tool, stain, finish, glue, tips, nocks and feathers for the first go at it! The second time around is MUCH cheaper as mostly the shafts are the only things needed if you buy tips/feathers/nocks in bulk.

I try and be frugal as much as possible. I cut my own tabs from leather scraps. $5.00 and I cut up 7 tabs for my son and I. These will last a very long time if we don't loose them! I made my own Flu Flu arrows from some old shafts I had laying around, used feathers from my turkey I killed last spring and miss matched nocks! I made my son a arm guard and back quiver that he just loves and I enjoyed very much making it for him! I'm to the point if I can make it I'd rather do so!

Yeah, kinda like fly tieing or reloading.Always seems alot to get in.Problem is if you decide you dont like it then its a loss to sell out of it. I guess we just have to help newbies out as much as we can.
