Interesting read. http://missoulian.com/lifestyles/re...cle_f9f4e7d6-0029-11e1-bafb-001cc4c03286.html
That's a really interesting read. I've always thought to myself once I was all settled in the stand that I was happy when the birds started landing in my tree and squirrels came close because that must mean they've accepted that I'm there/don'n know I'm there. Thanks for the link!
Very good read. I've often noticed when rabbit hunting that walking generally didn't kick up a rabbit. However, stopping is the thing that would kick them up. It was as if they felt like you stopped because you saw them, therefore it was time to make a run for it. Don't know if that's true or not, but I generally don't stop when walking to my stand. I just walk in and get set up. Nothing I can do before shooting light, anyway.
That is pretty cool. I always had that thought in the back of my head but never seen any research done on it. Thanks.
Intersting article. It might explain why some guys never seem to see any deer ...all joking aside, it just isn't breaking any new ground with me. Birds have gone silent and squirrels have barked at me ever since I first stepped into their world. This is why we go early, get set up and sit quiet & still.... the human mind; the greatest equalizer EVER!!
I quit skimming when he began pointing out how prairie dogs know whether it is a gun or a telescope slung over your shoulder and therefore react differently. LOL!
While sitting in stand, I seem to get busted by more squirrels than any other critter. I can be completely still and they spot me and sound the alarms. :D
It's because of your bow. Bring in a golf club next time and all is well! I realize critters sound the alarms on us, this particular article just takes it to whole new level of paranoia.
I agree. Yes, many animals know we're there. However, in my experience it seems like they simply forget after awhile or just don't care. Perhaps once in a while there's that really annoying squirrel or chipmunk (god those things are loud for being so small lol) that just won't shut up - but solving that problem is easy. Small game points - let see if they can recognize those as a threat! :D
I've been going out in my ghillie suit a bit (been meaning to post pics). Its a WHOLE different world. Turned around one day and heard a purring noise...it was a squirrel a few feet away. I've also had birds land right in front of my face and a mole almost climb up my pants leg. Well, I guess it was a mole. It was the size of a mouse, no hair, and had a pointy snout.
Read this yesterday. It's actually my hometown paper. We have killed a lot of elk while squirrels were chattering their heads off. I think similar animals warn similar animals. I don't think, however, that there is a secret inter-specie warning alarm system.
