Are dream jobs/day jobs truly an imaginary entity? A pipe dream?

My dads college roommate is a veterinarian and loves what he does. Is really happy and lives well. So it can be done.

I like my job and what I do. I just hate dealing with Caterpillar and hate what my boss and his family are doing to the company.

The boss/owner is 86 years old and shows up about 2 hours a day and he has 2 alcoholic sons that "work" there on and off when they feel like it. They are bleeding the company dry.

We talked about dream jobs one time in my Microeconomics class. The professor randomly picked out kids from the room of 200 and said "If money wasn't and issue and you could have absolutely any job in the world, what would it be?"

"Retired. Professional fisherman. Football coach. News anchor. Actor. Bikini model oiler guy. Yankees batting practice thrower."

The point was where are all the doctos, janitors and fireman? There are only a number of true dream jobs out there, its something if you find one.

I have managed to achieve my "dream" job of working with military aircraft at a young age. It's a great job for a great company and keeps me interested/challenged for the most part. I make a decent amount but am currently saddled with lots of student debt. I know in 10 years when those are gone it will be well worth it. This past year I have learned to treasure the things more important than where I go to make money. I have gotten married and taken on the role of father to an incredible step son who enjoys the same things I do and wants to be like me. His mom is absolutely my best friend and partner in everything.

Before I met them, the goal of getting the dream job used to be everything. Now it has moved down the list aways. I find joy in being with my family even through some very trying times this past year.

I say find something to be joyful about and don't bring work back home. When I stopped doing that and left work at my desk, things got much better while going through the same feelings you are having now.

We are in the same boat buddy. That is why I am working an extra 30-40 hours a month.....so my family doesn't have to be poor anymore. I am sick of it.

I hate the long hours but this job has been very interesting over the years ( 25 years ). While it isn't a dream job... I would miss it if I quit to find something else and I am too old to start over.
