Anyone have any Information on the proficiency tests that are required per their states cities? I've been looking for Info for Minnesota city hunts but can't seem to find anything. There's some outstanding big buck hunting In the area's that surround the Twin Cities In Minnesota and would love to get some Info on this.

The city hunt I participate in accepts 50 hunters. You need to shoot 5 arrows at 15 yards, 5 at 17yards, and 5 at 20 yards. You are shooting at a Glendale 3D target with the heart being 20 points, the lungs 15 and the liver or rest of the body 5 points, so there are 300 points possible. You need to figure that your going to have to shoot at least a 270 to get into the hunt, so although putting every arrow in the lungs will result in a dead deer it wont cut it for the proficiency test. You're going to have to get majority of your arrows in the heart.

The test does do a very good job of plucking the best shooters out of the group; however, it is also very obvious that just because you can shoot doesnt mean you are a good or ethical hunter. I'd almost like to see a written test too!

Been looking at this myself. I need to get a little more proficient before I apply. Hoping to make it later this summer.

    Thanks for the reply Craig.

3 out of 5 arrows have to be In this 2 Inch range (heart) with the rest being lung shots at least. Pretty tough for a traditional bowhunter, specially In the 17 and 20 yard ranges. I was afraid of this. I still might give this a shot but this proficiency test certainly Isn't an easy task for traditional bowhunters.

We here in NC do not have that as far as I know but, we do have a late season "Urban Season". I believe it is usually in Feb. Only cities that have enough interest have them or if the city has a high deer population and the City officials see it necessary. I think this would be a great idea but, as MNpurple stated having a written test would be in my opinion a great way to evaluate the hunters. Of course they could lie just to get in. I do think it takes a much more responsible and more ethical hunter to hunt the city limits. I can definitely see the importance of a great shot as an injured deer running into traffic and neighborhoods could get dangerous real fast on top of people and kids roaming wooded areas.

Give it a shot Steve, nothing to lose except a little travel time. The city hunt I am in isn't the place to look for big bucks though. The largest deer I have seen to come out of it was a 120"10 point. THis hunt is a double earn a buck (2 does before a buck.) Last years final tally was 70 deer taken of which 8 were nubbin bucks and 1 was a 6 point. I dont know why, there just aren't many decent bucks here.
