Hey everyone. Just joined to run some information by to see what people think. Going on an archery elk hunt...I've read several posts and see everyone basically says stay away from mechanicals due to penetration issues and that elk are tough. I completely understand that but looking for feedback related directly to my setup . I shoot a Bowtech Insanity 70lbs, 29in draw, total arrow weight with broadhead about 360 gr., 330 fps, 2 blade 100 gr. Rage Chisel Tip. That setup produces 87 ft-lb of KE and 0.53 slugs of momentum. My arrow flight is phenomenal with 100 grain rage and consistently shoot a 12 inch group at 50 yards (so a decent shooter). I know as long as I make a good shot, it should be a problem but my question is if I make a marginal shot b/c of conditions/elk fever/etc...with this setup, should I be worried about penetration on an elk with a Rage. I do know Rage blades are a little flimsy and most likely if I use Rage I'll go to the titaniums for elk. What's everyone's thought?
Honestly in my opinion, I would ditch the mechs. I would only shoot fixed blades on an animal the size of an elk. I'm pretty sure you would be fine but its an unnecessary risk in my opinion. But that's just my 2 cents. good luck out there taggin a big bugler.
Your are going to get several answers, but this is what I would personally do. Ditch the Mechs, you can make a fixed head fly just as good anything at any given distance. Your doing your bow, and yourself shooting that light of an arrow. Bump up, somewhere above 450gr. You will still be around 300fps and be much better off penetration wise. I personally would aim for 500+ Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
