got my 2nd Archery deer today, a young doe.....around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It was COLD... 3 does came by around 1ish.....i went to raise my bow on the largest of the 3 but they saw my movement (which wasnt much at all) and ran off .....one of the 3 didnt go far and eventually wandered back within one of my shooting lanes. I raise my bow and draw..but my elbow his the wall of my deer stand and makes a noise and GONE!... DOH!.....so its only 1:45 by this point....lots of day left, though I'm not feeling optimistic about it at this point. about an hour goes by and the other 2 deer that had run off earlier and not returned are wandering back down the ridge towards the field area....i guess i hadn't spooked them THAT bad.... I take the shot on the closest one which was the smaller of the two...but no big deal to me.....and the arrow goes a litte too high and I spine the poor thing. (that's Bastard #1).....I've never had this before since I'm newer to bow hunting....so i was kinda of panicked....I take an other shot and miss!....by now the doe is laying down...with her head pointed toward me...so i dont have much of a shot....I get the idea that i can put it in the deer chest....well...the arrow went high and right through the central computer. ..... not an ideal shot...and not what i intended to do....but she didnt move a muscle after that. Cleaning it...I found it was a momma to be (bastard #2).,....I know that this late in the season they are almost ALL mommas to be....but still feel kinda bad....being pro-life and all! oh my! what a day! I still have 2 tags left (had bought 4)....1 hunting day (based on my free time...season ends the 17th)....but I dont think I'm going back out...I think my bow is shooting high and I dont want a repeat of the less-than-ideal shot. anywho.... here she is!
Congrats and don't worry about her being pregnant. If that was big deal, you wouldn't be allowed to hunt after the rut. Enjoy your backstraps.
No sweat Saw 3 fresh road kill does this am. That is the real waste. Not a good hunting kill where the meat is not wasted
Several years ago I had a season from hell. I was still shooting a High Country Excaliber and hunting a small field. It was early season and I wanted to put a doe down for the freezer. This one doe had come by my stand several times that morning with the year before fawn( I'm guessing). Well she finally tempted me the last time and I pulled back and let the arrow fling. The arrow hit her high on the shoulder and dropped her like a brick. At this point I'm excited cause I thought I'd just dropped my first deer with a bow. A few seconds later I notice she is still alive kicking with her back legs and sliding over the hill. Now I didn't have time to react for a second shot( cause I wasn't paying attention) and she got out of sight, but I knew she wasn't far cause I could still hear her kicking up the leaves. I climbed down from the stand and slowly worked over the hill and found her near the bottom. I got about 20 yds away and pulled back once again only to repeat the same shot that wounded the animal. Disgusted I was, horribly digusted. After getting someone to help me I finally had to use my knife to put her down. This stuff happens, but you have to try to take care of the situation fast and ethical as possible. Two weeks later same stand only this time I have the biggest buck I've had a chance on in front of me. I put an absolute horrble shot on this buck right thru the ponch. Didn't find the deer for 2 weeks and this just about ended bowhunting for me and I had just started. I ended up getting rid of the excaliber and was just so mad at myself. Well when summer came I bought a new bow (fitted to me) and began to shoot about everyday. I still reflect on that season and it was by far my worst ever. Things have been pretty good since then and hopefully will be seasons to come. Remember no matter how bad it seems there is always someone out there that has been there. Good luck with the upcoming season. wvbowhunter
