I have a question. I have an Elite Answer bow. According to the spec sheet. My arrow speed is 302 fps at a 27 inch draw and set at 70 lbs. My question is my total arrow weight is 438. Shooting a full metal jacket 10.2/grain per inch. So what is my approximate feet per second. I am trying to determin how much kenetic energy I'm producing. Thank you.

Your spec sheet is like mathews stated IBO speed. Almost every shop has a chrono or You can buy one cheap. You are closer to 280 then 302 imo.

Thanks Bauer6. Best I can tell I am at 260 FPS with KE right at 65. Kinda wondering if I have enough KE for the TOXIC broadheads and 2 inch Mathews Edition Grim Reapers that I have. Right on the edge of what GR recomends which is 65.

You'll have plenty for the toxic, and for the GR if its border line I'd steer away from it because obviously theres that good chance of error

Agree, I shoot Grim Reapers with 26-27 inch DL with a Hoyt Alphamax set at 72 pounds. Why they call the 2" cut the "Whitetail Special" is beyond my comprehension. The 1-3/8" cut is plenty wide enough, and will provide all the penetration you need with your set up. The only difference between the two heads, is the depth of the slots in the collars. You can buy replacement blades with the 1-3/8" collars and convert to the smaller size and have 3 sets of backup blades.

IBO is calculated using a 70 pound bow, with a 30 inch draw, and a 350 grain arrow. For a rough estimate, add/subtract 10 fps per inch of draw and 2 fps per pound of draw weight. I have no idea how to guess based on the change of grains in an arrow. Also, do not forget, things like monkey tails on your bow reduce arrow speed somewhat. (I have four of them).

I do know my setup is 29 inch draw mathews DXT set at 68 pounds shooting 464 grain arrows. I shoot 262-265 fps. The IBO on that bow is 323. Doing the rough estimate from above, the 1 inch loss of draw would put me at 313, the 2 pounds would put me at 309 fps. Then things like my stabilizer, string accessories, and the extra 114 grains on my arrow (464-350) drop me the next 45 fps or so.

Note: these are extrememly rough guesses (except my actual set up and speed). but it is a starting point. Also, there is a way in which you can shoot your 20 yard pin at 20 yards, then again at 40 yards aiming with your 20 yard pin at the original spot. Measure the drop from your 20yard shot to your 40 yard shot and that will give you an estimate on arrow speed. Just google it for the chart.
