What's up y'all? Haven't been on here too much lately. I've been crazy busy the last week or two. I did have time to do a little shooting this evening. Getting the Fusion 6 dialed in. It only took 6 months to get it but it'll be ready for the MO season opener on Sept 15!
Going bear hunting this weekend. Then moose hunting in 3 weeks. I have done nothing to prepare for deer season here at home.
Have any of you shot a moose/elk? I've watched people shoot them on tv before but never hear them talk about how difficult it is to cut them up and get them out of the woods. I imagine that it is extremely difficult. You would have to have a team of people to help you wouldn't you?
Well our bear bait is not active yet. Last year I had a few bears coming in this year none so far. This is my first actual moose hunt and we definitely plan on quartering the moose before getting it out of the woods. The law used to require that the moose be brought whole to the tagging station, but the law had since been changed.
Hope you all have a safe Labor Day. We always stay home. I plan to shoot some, grill some, and drink some .
Hey boys. So I had action every night but it was the same sow with Cubs. And in Ontario you can not shoot a sow with Cubs. I'll be going back up next week to a different stand with a active bait. Joe as per moose. The guys I hunt with we have only had cow tags. This year is our first year with a bull tag. Although when I was a teen I was in my dads group where they annually had bull tags at that time. And yes it's a job and a half. Put it this way. When I was 15 I went my my dads group. They shot a bull that was huge!!! They couldn't get to him with any vehicle so they had to quarter him in the bush. When the got the four quarters to camp. They weighed it in at 900lbs. That's no ribs, internals, blood, head etc. so imagine the size of this animal. They estimated he was a 1300+ lb bull moose. The cows I have personally shot and gutted and quartered were still a job. I too once had to quarter in bush. In northern Ontario by mid October it's already below freezing overnight and cool during day. So I usually quarter but leave skin on for protection and hang at camp. You should be equipped with correct tools like a bone saw. Cutting the hide with a sharp knife is no different then deer or bear. I don't know how those Alaskan locals do it alone or in small groups. In Ontario most group sizes are 6-12 hunters. Otherwise you won't get a tag. So everytime I've had a lot of help.
Sorry fellas, I have to bow out. My season is over, as I 'm scheduled for bypass surgery on Thursday. Please find a worthy replacement and kick some butt. With any luck, Ill be back in the woods in two months. I'll check in with you guys as the season progresses. Best of luck, Rob
