I just got in the stand. Legal light is until 7:25. Im on my hilltop stand, it's full of does here. Was hoping to take one out of here opening day and but didn't hunt this spot as the wind was all crazy. Wanted to take one from here early then stay out of here until late October when the boys shows up. Temps are a little warmer then they were on the opening day last week. Winds from yesterday died down so should be a good sit. Hopefully can post 50 points tonight.
Good luck to anybody getting out this week. So far I know I am hunting PA this afternoon and maybe OH tomorrow afternoon.
Didn't have any luck with deer last night. Took out a yote though. Bastards were running all around me last night. I saw some deer peeking from a distance then turned away. No way they winded me, they must have seen the coyotes. This year I invested in a better electronic call. As soon as I fill my tags it's going to be a massacre all winter long.
Well tonight in PA didn't work out. But the truck is packed and I am hitting the road for OH at 3:30am tomorrow. I am spending the day up there.
Don't know if I'll get out this week or not. It's suppose to get back into the upper 70s and low 80s. So I may just shoot and scout out some areas for when it cools down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Had some truck trouble so I didn't make it to OH today. The old Silverado with 188k miles is getting tired LOL.
I took off from work early. Getting in there this evening. I'm coming out with a doe tonight.... dead or alive LOL
Jumped some deer close to my stand this morning. Hope it wasn't the big boy. Checked the camera and he stopped by yesterday before dark. That's the way it goes!
Well I just checked the camera card while on way to stand. Looks like no deer have been here since the Sunday coyote night. Here's to hoping tonight is the night they decide to come back.
Looks like tonight was the night boys. 5 does came in. I took the juiciest one. I'm somewhat concerned though. I use light knocks and the shot looked great. Only thing I'm afraid is it didn't pass thru it was sticking out of her on the entrance side. I'm not used to seeing that with my 31" draw 70lb set up. Should I let this one lay for a bit? Shoulder blade maybe?
If the nock was sticking out on this side it means you went through cavity and probably hit off shoulder. Might want to wait a little bit but she should be dead. Might not be a good blood trail if there was no where for the blood to come out until the arrow broke
How much penetration? That will tell you if got the shoulder blade on the entrance since or the offside shoulder.
Thanks for the help boys. I climbed down after 30 mins. Went to the scene of the crime. I couldn't see any blood which worried me. I looked 15 yards away I see broken arrow tip. And from there forward was nothing but blood. She was about 60 yards away dead as can be. I'll post pics later boys. Just hanging her up in the garage now.
Way to get it done. I don't know when I will make it into the deer woods. Had a successful moose hunt. I am heading to kansas in a month for an 8 day hunt, so I should be able to smack a doe at least.
Congrats on the doe chago and congrats on the moose dmen. I hope to be back in deer woods Thursday or Friday evening just wondering if i should go out right before cold front or right after?
That's what I'm talking about! Let's see those pictures! Way to recover your deer before the coyotes got her
So boys here are the pics. So the story of course. This stand is along a ridge that has a trail on it. On both sides of the trail it goes steep down hill into thick bedding on both sides. Normally these does come from behind me, but I guess after the coyote spook they went to the neighbours. Today they came from the neighbours side, thank god I am religious with my scent control as they were just hardly on the border of my scent down wind. They turned into my clearing just before my down wind. 3 does and 2 fawns came in. I took the biggest one, she is a huge SOB. Pics do not do her justice, this is a 174lb dressed doe!!!! Welcome to Ontario boys. So I hit her quartering towards me. The reason the nock didn't go through was because I hit her great behind the shoulder. But it hit the inside of the opposite shoulder blade on a sharp angle. Forcing the arrow to snap, leaving about 4" including the nock outside her body. But!!! since the arrow broke, the remaining 2' with broad head deflected and shot down her entire body literally coming out near her anus. So it was a double lung and a gut shot all in one LOL When I opened her up the boiler room and the guts were all a mess.
