has anyone had this happen to them, Two times now i have been walking to my vehicle during the rut once was a morning hunt and the other was a eve hunt, the first hunt was a eve hunt on a hot day in late oct. i had been on a ridge doing some rattling when a pack of dogs when by about 30 min before dark i hadn't seen any deer and the mosquitoes was killing me so i walked down the ridge and into the field walking about forty yards out in the corn i looked up and across the field walks a nice buck and he looks right at me, i am busted so by instinct i lean down (like i am going to hide ) and the deer takes across the field like he it charging me this starts about 150 yards away, so i put a arrow on my bow and just stand there thinking no deer is this dumb but if he gets 50 yards from me it's on...well he does and then turns broad side as he then made me out, too late arrow is on the way and it's over in like 10 seconds from when it started. so the thing is i think i figured out what is going on the deer seen the stand chains over my head and thought i was a buck. this happened again the fallowing year on a morning hunt, i was walking back to my truck when a small buck walked out of a bedding area in a bean field about 350 yards away ,same deal i leaned over and turn back to the woods and walked about ten yards to a large oak tree and simply walked behind it and peered out across the field to where the buck was standing. But he is now running across the field right to me,again i put a arrow on the bow and the deer walks five feet from me from around the big oak and i am at full draw and boy is he surprised to find me, all over in about one minute, same stand and the cable/chains are over my head and i am flat busted in the field. it's like ringing a bell. anyone else have this happen?
Based on that photo......if those bucks thought you were a buck.........these are classic examples that natural selection is not only real.....but alive and well.
My brother (kninedr) was taking his stand down a few years ago. He was at the base of his tree throwing all his steps into a bag. A 9 pt did the ol' stiff legged walk to within 15 yds. Bad move, especially during rifle season :D He was dumbfounded, but glad he had re-loaded his rifle from the walk back to the cabin.
