I hope/plan to do a baited hunt next fall for black bear. But I would like to start planning a spot and stalk hunt for the following spring or fall. But every outfitter I see if either baited hunts or super far away, like alaska. So i figured maybe someone on here knew of a place I have a realistic chance of a spot and stalk bear hunt some where closer. Would rather an outfitter if you know one...would rather pay double the money but have years experience next to me. Or if anyone here ever goes and could use a new friend for a week I'm open to that also. Any info would be nice guys and gals.
You need to try Colorado. This year my son shot a beautiful one while sitting in his elk stand, plus he called 2 others to him by huffing and popping his teeth together. Both came within 30 yds. Only problem was didn't have his bow or pistol with him, so he didn't try working them any closer. Also got a good Mulie and missed a monster elk.
Yeah I don't mind the challenge. Because its a challenge though I don't just want to book a flight to Washington and glass the first field I see. I'm hoping to find someone who can help...an outfitter would he the best. Who doesn't want to be 20 yards full draw from somethin that can kill them? Lol
No outfitter. We've been DIY Elk Hunting in Colorado for last 15 years or so. Just happened to be in an area that has a good bear population I guess.
Dont use an outfitter, bear is one of the easiest DIY western hunts a guy can do. Spring bear is a very attainable trophy. Very good animal to stalk as well, considering their eye sight. Here is one I took spot and stalk last year. When I am off work I can post some more info on the subject Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
There is an awesome place in the central Catskills of NY outfitter an all. But it is not legal to bat in NY. In the 65000 acres (nearly untouched) behind my house in the mountains we have tons of bear and it takes some serious walking and dedication to get into the mountain swamps but absolutely worth it!
Man that's awesome. Yes please do if you have a minute to post more. I guess I'm just not confident enough I can look at a map then have a real shot at taking one when I get there...without any real scouting or anything. Would like to be wrong because I don't have money to burn like that, but I have a hard time thinking I can.
Not in the Catskills, but up in my area in the Northern part of the Adirondacks i have. My local butcher for the last 3-4 years has always had a new bear each day in Sept. In fact, DEC has released information pertaining to the over abundance of the black bear population. ill look up the outfitter i was talking about you can check out their work. They have had a few televised shows go through them.
I have spot and stalk hunted NM the last 3 yrs in the fall for bear. So far I haven't killed however someone on our trip always does. Its really an awesome and fairly easy hunt.
Public land, We have hunted the same general area all three years so naturally we learn more about the area each trip. I have also became fairly good friends with a local guy out there so he is pretty helpful as well. There is certainly no shortage of bear, or any other game animals for that matter, where we hunt. Its mostly a matter of finding the hot food source and then finding a shooter. The year before last it seemed like everytime we left camp we returned to find fresh bear crap in or near our kitchen tent. For my money this is one of the most affordable, funnest, and highest possiblity for success dollar for dollar. OTC non res tags run like $350 if I remember correctly. Good trout fishin also. I'll also add the tag is good for the year from April through the following March I believe. So a guy could hunt the spring and if unsuccessful return and hunt the fall.
Man that sounds pretty awesome. Ill be keeping you in mind if I find a way to be able, Ill send you a PM. Thanks a ton for the heads up!
