you should have went to Kansas State or Kansas University instead. IHunt could point you in right direction for good puplic hunting around KS or I could assist you around KU. Have you tried googling puplic hunting near VT?

I've heard there may be hunting near the ammunition plant. The other option would be the Jefferson National Forest out 460. You can probably google or talk to the locals, sporting goods dealers or police dept for additional insights.

As far as land there are literally 1000's of acres of public hunting land within a short drive of that area. I hunt there occasionally but not often or else I wouldn't mind showing you some spots. I prefer Wildlife Management Areas but there is a ton of National/State forest land as well.

Well I grew up in that area so I can say you are far luckier than I at the moment. Jefferson national forest is a great place to start. I used to hunt at Gatewood in Pulaski. I am sure there is tons of land off 460 with access. Hit up the va wildlife site for more specific info though. Good luck and happy hunting.
