I was wondering if anyone else liked to hunt black bears.I've been hunting them since 1972 and have taken 30+ bears.I've been guiding hunters for them since 1977 and love it.The spring season just started here and I'll be hunting them in 3 weeks since I don't have any non-residents coming this spring.
I make part of my living at it. Usually take around 15 hunters a year. Fall only season in Ontario though.
I love i hunting bears but haven't done it in a long time but want to soon again. I shot a 500 lber in Idaho with the ole stick and string and 250 in Ontario with the wheel bow!!Walt
Lucky you!!! To answer the question of the poster I absolutely love bear hunting. Been doing my own bear hunting for 20+ years now.
I love it, been hunting them for years. I've killed a few good ones, one ended up 19 14/16ths and was 400+ in the spring.. Stickbow, I wanna see a pic of that Idaho 500lbr!! .. thats a huge bear out here.. Spring or fall, blackie or color phase? Biggest bear I have seen in this state was a color phase I am pretty sure he was 450 Plus right out of the den.. man I wanted to get him.. hope hes still around cause I am headed into his area this weekend for the first time..
Steve I may have to pick your brains one day about sorting a bear hunt , maybe a Will , Russ Steve and Dave GTG bear hunt . I never had any intention to bear hunt when I started bowhunting , but its become quite appealing as time has gone by . I can see it being good for the old adrenaline rush as a bear approaches a bate station 10-15yds away , does the meat taste good ?? :?
Shed i will ahve to take a picture of the rug on my parents wall it is the only pics I have of it. The airlines lost my camera so I have one pic of the rug draped over a log so next time I am up there this weekend I will take a pic of the rug. He is a color phase also brown.. His head was only 18 inchs but he squares just under 7 foot!! Walt
Bails-UK Meat is very good if you de bone and remove much of the fat. I was born in England, much better hunting opportunities here. We will have to talk soon. Dean
Where you wanna go? We'd be better off going to some other state then Minnesota, way too many bear hunters here. The hunting Is down right tough here. Lots of other states out there though, I'd be up for It In a heart beat!!! I'd like to try a Spring bear hunt. It's an adrenaline rush and then some Dave!! No doubt about that. The meat Is excellent IF the person takes care of their bear properly after they shoot one. Allot of people don't like the taste and this Is a big reason why. Bear should be skun out and quartered right away, specially the bigger ones being a bear has allot of fat In It's meat and hide. They need to cool right away. You don't have to remove the bone. The bone on a bear Is just like any other wild game or beef for that matter. Meat closest to the bone always taste's better.

Where in England ?? and you're right about the hunting opertunities . Steve ...... I'm already lickin my lips Buddy , sounds like i've been missing out .
I love bear hunting... Schultzy, surprised at your comment about about MN over crowding.. I don't think I hunt to far from you when in MN and although iut seems crowded by the roads, I seemed to have a lot of territory to myself if I hiked back a little. However getting the bait back there can be a pain.
I know you've heard me comment on this before that the area I hunt In Is absolutely nuts with people. We don't go 50 to 100 yards off of a road like 90% of the people do. Were hiking back anywhere from a 1/2 mile to sometimes 2 miles on foot through tough walking terrain. We don't hunt off of logging roads, Its to easy of access for bear hunters so they get pounded. Were doing the best we can to get away from people but In allot of cases It just doesn't matter. People every 3 to 4 tenths hunting tends to make hunting very difficult. I could go on and on. Hunting pressure was never anything close to this In this same area when they gave out less permits 10+ years ago. That's when the hunting was good.
I did it last year for the first time and it was a lotta fun. Hopefully I'll get to do it again sometime.
I Love Bear hunting, but have not done so since 06 when I killed a 20+" 450 Black in Alberta. My favorite place to hunt would be around Riding Mountain Park in Manitoba. Without Question!! Dan
