It's a laughable stance to take, but you'd be shocked how many parents go this route....

It's along the lines of the infamous "I got the flu from my flu vaccine"

Yeah, one of my wife's friends has been emailing all this pseudo science to my wife about how vaccines will give our kid all kinds of diseases, so I've been having to research actual science articles to prove to my wife that her friend is a moron.

One of my friends is a chiropractor. He didn't vaccinate any of his kids, saying it caused autism, etc. He is a firm believer that ANYTHING can be fixed by chiropractic ajdustment. He's a nut.

Ask him how many sessions did it take to adjust his stupidity to such a high level.

Vaccines have saved more lives in the last hundred years then about any other medical advancement.
As to higher incidents or diagnoses of autism there doesn't seem to be evidence of a correlation. The fact is the medical community and people in general are more aware of autism and therefore can better diagnose it...or they have more Incentive to diagnose and treat it.

Present day. " Doctor I think my daughter is Autistic" ...ok let's run some test and find out. What kind of insurances did you say you have?

1948: " Doctor, my son Billy is a little slow he stares at the wall and sings" ....don't worry give him a cookie to keep him quite, he will grow out of it.

Any wonder why we have more cases of autism ?

If/when we have kids, we'll wait until 1yo for shots.

My sister had a seizure the day she got early vaccines, now severly mentally handicapped. Basically a 1 yo in a 35 yo's body.

My niece had a seizure the day following shots. Now has epilepsy. Nephew, the same. The rest of the kids they waited until 1 and their fine.

Not saying everyone should, but I sure will.

That sounds like a genetic issue that might run in your family. It is true that some people can have violent reactions to certain vaccines, but that is also true for Tylenol or peanut butter. The chances of that happening are 1 in several millions, so with that high of a rate within your family seems like a genetic issue.

In 1975, the girl I was going out with and I both got the Swine Flu vaccine. I got sick and she didn't. I haven't had a flu shot since and have not had the flu since either. As a matter of fact, I've only been sick once in the last 15 years. No more flu shots for me.

We had a few patients present to the emergency room with guillian-barre syndrome after getting h1n1 flu vaccinations. GBS is a very real recognized side effect of vaccines. It can cause death and life time disability. The risk is small but that's not very reassuring to the people who will spend the rest of their lives being paralyzed.

So, if one little shot can shut down some people's entire nervous system, it is not out of the realm of possibility that even in non sensitive people that multiple vaccines over time aren't all that great for you either.

I think the basic, decades old vaccines are recommended (DT, rubella, polio, pertussis... etc..) however I really question the advice of the getting the oodles of new vaccines and yearly flu vaccines.

As a kid I got the basic ones, also got a small pox vaccine. Since I was about 7 the only vaccine I've gotten is a tetanus shot. (my mom and dad worked in hospitals and even back then, some medical folks were suspicious of some vaccines... one of the ED docs would fake my vaccination records. lol)

When I worked in the hospital, none of us got flu shots. Nurses and docs I worked with both believed they were next to useless and that people developed bronchitis suspiciously often after getting the shot.

So... I'm not some 'no vaccines ever' kind of freak... but I also believe that they are not completely harmless and I won't line up like a sheep in chute to get them. ;)

Its not as simple as people would like it to be. Every human reacts to the same chemicals differently.

I get flu shots, and i dont get the flu. Actually my medical control REQUIRES a flu shot or i have to wear a mask anytime im with a patient or in the hospital.

LOL, it is scientifically impossible to get the flu from a flu vaccine. The virus particles they inject are dead, it is not a live vaccine. It cannot replicate in your body and make you sick. Your body may have had an adverse reaction to the injection, but you did not get the flu.

As for the luck of not having the flu since, sounds like you have a sound immune system. Hope you can keep up the streak as you advance in age. I personally will have a flu shot annually for the rest of my life. It only protects against 3 or 4 strains each year that the CDC predicts to be the most prevelant for the upcoming flu season so it is far from foolproof, but it's better than nothing..because having the flu sucks.

Not the self diagnosed I have a cold so I tell everyone I have the flu, but actual cases of the flu make you feel like death. lol

There are indeed some forms of live virus vaccine. The nasal spray flu vaccine is a live virus.

Not every vaccine contains the dead virus, some vaccines contain a weakened version of the virus, so there is a possibility to get sick from one. GregH could have had the virus in the same way people get chickenpox. He could have gotten sick, but then built up the antibodies against the virus which is why he hasn't gotten sick the last 15 years.

The question that has never been satisfactorily answered for me is does large amounts of the population getting flu shots encourage the "growth" of other more resistant flu strains.

Both of my kids have gotten all of their vaccines. The theoritical risk is outweighed by the proven benefit.

Nasal spray version is indeed live, but there is a LOT of debate on whether even it can give you the flu (to my knowledge, a proven case doesn't exist). I was referring to the injections, which is the vaccine 99.99% of the people receive, then complain of getting the flu. For normal healthy humans, it isn't dire to get one as you will likely only get ill for a few days from it. For elderly people, it's much more important as the mortality rate from flu is much higher.

You Guys want to discuss a ripoff / treatment that doesn't work? Tamiflu. You must take it within 48 hrs of exposure or it's essentially useless, and even if you do hit that window is doesn't necessarily lessen symptoms or cure the flu, it just decreases the amount of time you are sick by an average of 1 day. $150 medication for 1 less day of the same severity of illness. Lol

As for the resistance question, I don't think vaccines work that way as you aren't treating an already existent virus in the body, you are causing the body to already have it's immune system ready in case you do happen to come across that particular strain. Antibiotics on the other hand are being misused and creating bacteria already that we have no effective way of killing.

I have never been a very sickly person and have never had the flu vaccine. However I got mononucleosis about 3 years ago and it nearly put me in the grave. I swear I had never felt so sick in my entire life. I only missed one day of work when the symptoms initially hit me, but my goodness they hit me like a mack truck. I am talking 10/10 pain migraine headaches...and to top it all off I was travelling from Dallas back to Virginia on a plane. I had no access to any doctor for 6-8 hours as I travelled home. I felt like I wanted to put a drill in my brain to release the pressure.

Whats the point of my story, not sure....I really just wanted to vent b/c that mono thing still haunts my dreams. :)

All my kids have been vaccinated, although I have dissuaded my wife in giving them the flu vaccine. They are very healthy without it.
