I live in Kentucky and I heard online about a second rut that takes place one month after the first rut. This is the first time I have ever heard about it and I wanted to see if anyone else knows anything about it. If any of you guys do let me know.
    Thanks. :)

The second rut is when the yearling does come in to heat. Its usually about a month after the mature does are in heat. That's the first rut and the most active. The second rut is usually slower but i've found it to be the best to rattle or call in a giant. And food sources are usually red hot with activity. I'd say its starting here in Illinois. My brother shot two doe fawns yesterday and one was just starting to come into heat. Hopefully this clears up your ?.

In your area maybe but in the north around here no such thing. There have been a lot of good articles recently explaining the rut. True, unbred does coming into heat cycle at about 28 days. Most mature does, yearlings and older here in the north breed in Nov. Some fawns in healthy condition come into heat later but they need to be healthy and not under stress which is not happening in this area this year. Some poor nutrition and predators.

In the north the does are either bred or dead come December when the so called second rut would happen. Again, your area might be different as the farther south in deer range the less pronounced the rut is with multiple and less intense breeding peaks.

Either way I choose to hunt food sources after the rut. If a buck is seen at a distance using a doe bleat can bring him in though.

It is starting to kick in here. Bucks are chasing does in the field at night and on the cameras. Our gun season comes in Monday so a lot of bucks will probably die.

In NY the 2nd rut usually happens around 12/8...
Hunt food sources and if you see a doe hang on... he could be right behind her.

Yearlings, inbred does, and does that weren't bred come in. I have actually seen/ and killed bigger deer during this time than early November. In my opinion its one of the most underrated times to be in the woods. A hot food source will be the ticket. In the past 3 days I got over 700 pics at my corn pile, but unfortunately all buck pics are at night.

What everyone else said...unbred mature does and yearlings come into estrus. Doesnt really happen if you dont have a high population.

It's funny how some people will believe anything their told instead of doing some research on the subject. And in the age of the internet when you can find out anything about anything.

Saw numerous young bucks this past weekend w/ noses to the ground. And most of the does were still screwed down from last month's party.

To be more specific yes it's when the yearling does come into estrous but to be more exact it's when they reach roughly 60-80 lbs. Thats when they are healthy enough to sustain weight through the winter months and are able to carry young. This happens like everyone says in December.
