I've never heard a buck make that sound in the woods except for one time in 1998. I released on arrow on a 4 1/2 year old 140" 10 point, and the moment the arrow hit him he let out a sound that was exactly the same as a buck roar. It was the wierdest thing. He was on a doe hardcore and didnt even take off running right away. It scared the crap outta me. He only ended up going 30 yards or so.
Never heard it, but I think calling it a roar sounds just plain cheesy. It's simply a grunt. I have also never heard the snort wheez sound. I just finished 9 straight days of dawn to dusk hunting and the only thing I heard out of any buck was an occasional grunt, and a few horns coming together. i should also mention I have never heard a doe bleet. Don't get me started on that baby calf sound the can call makes.lol
I've never heard a roar either. Lots of regular grunting. In fact, I've only heard a doe "bleat" one time in 30 years of hunting. I've heard this sound described/mentioned before, but it didn't make sence until I actually heard it. It's a noise that a buck makes that sounds like your fingernail going down the teeth of a comb. I saw an early season 7pt make this sound. Has anyone else heard this or know why they make this noise?
That's funny you say that, I just recently read somewhere on the web covering whitetail vocalization, and the site made mention of manufactures having a esterous call (can), but they stated they had no scientific evidence of such a call? I do know one thing for sure the call will bring in bucks at times, but always wondered if the does really even make this sound when in heat?
They absolutely make that EXACT sound! The one and ONLY time I ever saw/heard a doe make that sound (during rut) I was amazed at how much that "Can" sounds like it! I have had several bucks respond ot it in the past.
I think sometimes people give credit to a certain call when really a whitetails curiosity is what brought them in. I have brought whitetails in on accident many times simply cause they heard me and wanted to check it out. If they don't deem the sound as a threat, they will often check it out. i watched a possum bring in two does just yesterday, they just came in to see what was making the noise. I've always felt the can was way to quiet to actually get an out of range deers attention unless it was dead calm out and the deer was not moving. When I used to use the can call, I would usually have to flip it about 100 times or grunt to get their attention, and then very , very few bucks ever actually came in to check it out. I have never seen it work the way rattling, or a grunt call can, and have never seen it bring in a mature buck. I know a lot of people like the call and if it works for them, they should use it.
Never heard the roar. I had one Snort wheeze around me in at Mill Creek and then one near Bloomsburg.
I heard it once. I was hunting the corner of a cut corn field one morning. I had seen several deer that morning, as they were checking out my decoy. Around 10 I heard what I believe was a "buck roar" come from a thicket. Seconds later a small buck emerged chasing a doe. Many seasons ago my dad came back to the hunting shed during shotgun season. He said he had heard an 8 pointer run around making an awful growling noise for a few minutes while he was chasing a doe. When the Drury's released that video of it, he swore that was the sound he heard over 10 years ago.
Never heard a roar or snort wheeze. Just grunts and bleats. Never heard a doe do the can call either, for that matter.....just a regular bleat. 25yrs in the woods. My deer don't seem to vocalize that much.
Dont want to sound like I have heard everything but I have heard them all. This year the bucks are being very vocal. I have heard more snort wheezing this year than I ever have. Heard a few roars as well. I have only heard a doe making the estrus call one time about 6 or 7 yrs ago. I saw her in a thicket she did it about 3 times. In no time there was 2 150" bucks heading right for her. I think the can call is probably a little more effective with a decoy there for them to see.
Have heard them roar, grunt ,snort, wheeze, click, call in destress and call their fawns to them along with belching, coughing and farting. I'm with jmbuckhunter , a roar is just a loud overly excited grunt.
