Just curious. In 2x of the several close encounters I had last week with some good bucks, I heard this "Buck Roar" from bucks that were chasing does. I've never heard it before, and almost didn't believe it when I heard it, and 2x in one week must be pretty unusual. Anyone else heard a buck roar before?
Ive been deer hunting in Iowa and Missouri for 20 years and I have never even heard a snort wheeze or a buck roar. No one even knew anything about a "roar" until just a few years ago. Im not saying it doesnt happen, Ive just never heard it and I spent many hours a year in the woods.
Never heard one myself, but my brother and Dad were hunting together one morning several years ago and heard an extremely loud roar that they said startled them both coming from a bedding area on our property. Would like to hear one myself though
Heard It last year for the 1st time In 24 years of deer hunting. I watched a 2.5 year old buck chasing doe's around for about an hour. He must've done It at least 3 times. Pretty cool hearing It!!
I think your right, it's really a part of that vocalization, but definitely a lot more aggressive sounding. The second encounter last week where I heard it, I was walking out of the woods for a quick sandwich. Dan's dad had watched a real slammer chasing a doe all morning just about 100 yards from where I had this encounter, and also saw them head in this direction just minutes before I saw/heard it. I was walking out around 11am to get a quick sandwich, and bumped the doe. I don't think that buck knew I was there though, and got all bothered that the doe (who was bedded) got up and tried to get away, and he started grunting at her and then came the loud aggressive "growl". It was almost an aggressive PO'd noise, like he was upset that his doe was trying to get away and he was trying to intimidate her. The noise was closest to that death moan you will occasionally hear after shooting a deer, and sounded exactly like what you hear on TV when they talk about he growl. The other encounter last week was a buck on a doe that was grunting all morning in a creek bottom (right by the stand I chose not to sit in that morning ). Same scenario.......I'd hear crashing around in the thick stuff and in the water (creek bottom), and then occasionally I'd hear that growl. This went on for the better part of 20 minutes. Very cool stuff I'd say, just curious if anyone else had heard it. Both times the bucks were chasing.
yea its pretty cool last year the buck i shot did it once and this year ive seen a bunch of smaller 1.5 to 2.5 year olds gruntin and roaring and i acturally heard the one snort wheeze at this other buck and then the got into a tassle for like twenty minutes. It was deff one of the coolest things ive ever seen in the woods huntin.
I've never heard a roar. I did hear a snort wheeze for the first time last year. My buddy had a buck "roar" this year from 35 yards away. He said he almost fell out of his stand.
I've never heard a roar before, but I did hear my first snort wheeze last week in MO. It was a 2.5 chasing a doe, it took me by surprise that he did it because I didn't see any other bucks around. I kind of thought it was more of a buck to buck thing....who knows maybe there was another buck I never saw.
i've never heard a "roar", but i don't live in africa. i have heard loud aggressive grunts and snort weeze a couple of times. up until 5-6 years ago i never even heard a deer make any noise in the woods, except one time i saw a lost fawn making all sorts of noise crying for mommy. not sure why i never heard anything earlier in my hunting life, possibly because i wasn't out there the right time of year. not sure but i do know they are all vocal and we just need to be close enough to hear them
Two years ago I was hunting during mid Nov and had a 130 class 8 pt about 80 yards from my stand with a hot doe. Two smaller two year old bucks were hovering around about 30-40 yards away from them and were obviously interested in the doe as well. Whenever one of the smaller bucks would get too close the big 8 pt would charge at them making loud grunt sounds that sounded similar to the "roar". The 8 pt would nail them right in the ass with his rack as they turned and ran. This went on for about 15 minutes. It was pretty awesome to watch.
It's rare but it happens. I heard it several years ago when I was hunting a hardwood ridge and I had several deer around me but none were shooters. There were a couple of young bucks chasing around does and they were going back and forth down the ridge I was hunting. After around 10 minutes of this chasing, there was a long low grunt or growl from down one side of the ridge. The young bucks came undone when the other buck did this. He came up the ridge and he was a dandy. He chased off one of the other bucks and never presented me with a shot but it was really cool to experience.
I actually heard a buck do it the other day..Took me by surprise, too. I hadn't yet seen him, only a few doe...It was awesome. He did it again and snort wheezed shortly there after.
06 I watched one do it repeatedly as he chased away a smaller buck from his hot doe. Roars & snort-wheezes for 30 minutes...until I finally shot him.
