I canceled sat TV a long time ago. I got the antenna TV box and the Fire stick with Kodi. You do have to have good wifi for the firestick to work real well but its a good deal. As far as the antenna TV goes, my kids enjoy watching ME TV and one of the other channels that show old shows that I grew up on, hell even stuff thats before my time. Id rather them watch those shows than all that nickelodeon crap they show on cable today.
I saw a few smaller channels, but I cannot find the actual Outdoor Channel, which has all of the main shows we hear about. I ended up getting the MyoutdoorTV app, which is 9.99 a month with instant streaming. That'll hold me over.
Ok started reading about kodi. Some of my tech geek friends on here help me out. Is this a significant risk? As long as it's just streaming it's in the gray legality area I know. I'm more worried about out security. It seems like a backdoor where personal info could be compromised? Feedback?
If you use Kodi on your personal computer where you store important data, yeah there is a risk. If you use a separate system like an android box or raspberry pi, then the risk is minimum.
It is easily installed on the Amazon Fire without even attaching it to your PC. That is the way I installed Kodi and other side apps. Maybe a 15 minute process.
By the way, today would be the day to buy a Fire Stick if you're in the market. $15.00 off makes them only $24.99 for the standard or $34.99 for the voice activated. Amazon.com: Fire & Kindle Deals: Kindle Store
How does the fire stick work. Is a one and done plug and play or is it a monthly fee that needs continual updates
We have one. Not jailbroken or anything. You pay for the Prime subscription through Amazon and then you can plug it into any TV you want as long as there is wifi to connect to. You can take it on vacation with you or where ever you want to take it. So the stick is a one time purchase but the subscription is yearly. You also get the free 2 day shipping from Amazon which is nice too if you buy a fair amount of stuff from them.
The one we bought was jailbroken and you don't have any monthly fees. I think I paid 75 bucks and that was it. Free movies and shows as long as the apps hold up.
The Fire Stick alone is not really any different than a Roku, AppleTV or Chromecast. It is an app driven media player that plugs into your TV(basically giving you a smartTV). There are free apps available that will give you content, but things like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime all come with some type of costs associated with it. If you install the 3rd part App Kodi you can install add-on's within Kodi that will give you access to pretty much any TV Show, Movie, Channel, Sports, Music, Games, Live Events that you can imagine. There's no charge for Kodi or that add-on's so you are paying the one time cost of the Fire Stick and that is it.
Just read through everything. You guys keep saying apps to add on. Phoenix etc. Do you guys not run builds? I've been running the same build for months now and love it. It has every big name source out there and breaks them down into categories and such. Movies/Sports/TV Shows/PPV etc. The guy is constantly updating it fixing broken links and dead sources. He almost updates too much, but you can still use it and update whenever you want. I usually update once or twice a month.
