Well do you? I'm thinking about buying a bench press (craigslist deal) and also a treadmill. I actually prefer to run on a treadmill so don't hate. That way I can watch tv and get a workout at the same time. I just wonder how many people buy these items (with the intentions I have) and never use them? I'm hoping I won't be one of them. :D
I had a multi-station gym and it was a hoot. It was a low-end one with stacks of weights and a cable system. I'd kill myself with free weights. I also had a treadmill, it was a spiffy one (at the time). Really long tread so you could run on it. (it's tough to run on a short tread). Power incline to 10%. Integrated pulse monitor that became a zapper when it started to fail. Which was kind of funny. You get a better workout if you don't hold the rail anyway. :D I actually wore that baby out. (and not just because I have a big butt) If my current house had room, I'd have a treadmill again. Instead I go pull weeds, which is very tiring, but not particularly good exercise. Oh, I do have a Wii...but if I get to goofing off on that thing very much, the floor bounces so much that stuff rattles on the entertainment center. This is due to my larger, less exercised butt and a very tired 130 year old floor.
I use my bench press a LOT... though I do admit it sits a bit more vacant when I'm going through a round of P90X. Those workouts just tax you so much you don't have anything left for too much additional lifting beyond those.
Christine....interesting post. I bet you're in the minority of people who actually wear out the treadmill. Greg...I gave P90x a shot for a good month or so but stopped. I guess I wasn't motivated enough and my work schedule is so screwy I did not always feel like doing that 1 hour or so workout. Sounds sad when I say it but it was the truth. I'm one of those guys that still wants to eat any and everything I want but still be fit. Anybody else like this?
I do have a healthrider that sits, very much unloved and under-used, in the sunroom. My mom had it and then gave it to me. Sometimes when it's cold in here I'll go bounce around on it for a couple minutes until I warm up. It aggravates my shoulder injury so that my excuse for neglecting it. (and also when I do 'ride' on it, I hold my bad shoulder side arm in the air and then act like I'm bullriding... so there's a disturbing visual for you) I have been on a diet for most all of my life. I've run, jogged, biked thousands of miles, swam... and I've always had plenty of padding. Particularly my fat tummy and butt. I could do 50 sit-ups right now in less than three minutes easy... and yet, my belly pooches out like I drink beer all day long. At my age... I kind of quit worrying about it. :D
I have a treadmill and elliptical in the loft. I never use them but do use the treadmill at the gym 3-4 days a week. I have no motivation unless I drive a half hour and realize I need to get my gas money's worth.
Yep, and I am one:D In all seriousness, I have had a home gym ever since we moved in, but have added pieces along the way. Just about a month and a half ago, we finally moved all of he equipment upstairs into a dedicated gym room (rather than the basement). We layed down ~180 sq.ft of 1/2" foam flooring, too (makes it nice). We now have an elliptical, treadmill (both Sole units), and I have a bench/squat rack with a lat pull down on a cable (granted it's cheap, and I'm looking to replace it) plus 300lbs of plates, and olympic bar, various dumbells, and ultimate pushup's:D. We have TV cable run with plans to mount a little LCD on the wall as well. It's a nice setup (I'll try and get pictures tomorrow), and my wife and I both use it frequently. I workout 6 days a week, and while the cardio equipment doesn't get used as much during the summer (I run outside or ride my bike), I'm usually lifting 3-4 times a week in the gym. There's NO way I could motivate myself to drive to a gym, and I knew that all along which is why I opted for the home gym.
You know it. The other stuff is just for show, I get my real workout from that. In fact, sometimes I do a super set by shaking up fluffy whip cans.
I am a personal trainer. I have close to an entire gym in my house. I also have close to 70 published, written articles on the web if anyone is interested in reading them....
Matt...looking forward to the pics. Your home gym sounds similar to what I'd like to have. PSE...do you have a link? I'd like to take a look at them.
PSE .. I'd like to read them as well. Hook a playa up with a link! My brother and I have a 25'x25' paved basketball court at our house. Does that count? :D We got (and still do) a lot of use out that thing when we were kids.
I'm the moderator (MVP) on weightliftingforum.net, if anyone wants to check it out. Here are my articles: http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Will_E_Riggs ....if you ever lose the link, just google "Will Riggs" and they pop up. I'm certified through the American Council on Exercise, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Fitness Professionals Association, and also certified in nutrition.
I disagree with one thing you said. I never buy the shotgun starting out while playing Black Ops Zombies. :D I wait until I open a couple doors (upstairs) and then buy the machine gun at the bottom of the steps (kin der koten). More bullets = more points. I also keep my pistol I started out with and "pack a punch" it and get Mustang & Sally. I've made it to level 30 with a couple players doing this method. Haven't played in a long time though.
I currently have a membership to a gym and have no problem going there and working out. I think I'd love to have equipment at the house to workout and save the trip to the gym. The problem is I don't think I would be as motivated to workout if it was at home. That's one reason I have not given P90X a shot yet. I'm not sure I'd stick with it being an at home workout, although I think I'd love that workout.
I have nearly a full gym (mostly free weights and a rack)at home that got used darn near daily for years. But due to injuries and change in activities it has been nearly unused for a couple of years. We will be moving soon so it will need to go in the very near future so if someone is interested I can post up exactly what all I have.
I have some things I used to use alot, Bench with 350 lb olympic set. Squat rack, preacher curl, olympic curl bar, leg extension attachment. I have a curling machine, shrug bar, tricep bar, dumbels from 5-35 lb <<,not near enough, medicine ball, padded floor mat, lat pull down, chin bar, work out ball, tricep pulldown handles and other attachments. I even have a 4x8 mirror on the wall :D low pulley roll attachment. BUT since taking my new 8 hr day shift job, I go in early to the gym at work 5 days a week. We have it all there and them some. The gym there is better than most gyms that are just gyms in my area. Did back this morning doing dead lifts, lat pull downs and dumbell rows,,,,,,feelin good
My buddies and I converted an old, unoccupied garage and made a gym out of it. My friend is a carpenter and while they were remodeling a hotel in KC, he "acquired" 10 or so huge mirrors that we have completely around the room. The entire floor has foam tiles down. We have two full cages, dip bar set, dumb bells from 5-100 lbs, punching bags, two treadmills, tv for P90x, full surround sound stereo and a code lock for the entrance door. It is all a guy could really ever want.
