This being my first A.M. hunt of the season and the way the squirrels were in a feeding frenzy last night I feel good about today. Well Time to hit the shower and get out of here. It is 04:23 CST and I should be on stand by 05:10 and have a deer down by 08:30. :-)
Each time i go out, i see more and more deer..whether its the climate change, or what, but its bout time to get that doe in range...have had some opportunity to get it done..but a little out of range.its gonna all come together here soon. WE HOPE>.ha
Well a cool sit but no shots (or even deer from stand) I did bust one about 10 steps into the woods in the dark. It was no big deal as I had a ways to go to the tree I planned on sitting in. The bigger problem came when I was 40 yards from that tree and a very large bodied deer slinked out of the area without blowing or even really running...just that confident exit, that makes ya think it may have been Mr. Big....In only the moonlight, at close range..they are always monsters!! I did get to watch an awesome Coyote at about 90 yards, chase moles, mice or chipmunks it was very pretty. I wish he'd come at least 30 yards closer ...
Im taking my girlfriend out for the first time ever this PM, Success would be just seeing a deer for her, a kill would be EPIC.. Ill be at the blind where i was skunked and Isaac missed a mature doe (hmm coincidence?)...
Well im eating Crow on my words. I got up this morning, looked out and seen it had been raining but was stopped. Like a big dummy, I didnt check the radar As I was passing by the food source (standing corn) two vetry large Does crossed in front of me headed toward the bottle neck stand. I thought man there early as I was going to be in the tree 45 minutes early. I got to my parking spot, dressed and beat feet to the stand. As soon as it got light I start hearing thunder Then it pours all morning. This was my first sit there that I seen nothing. I think they were already in there beds preparing for the storm....sigh!
I'm going to call another deer down this weekend for me. Not sure what it will be. I'm going to hunt the stand at my house that usually produces year in and year out for the first time Saturday morning. I'm being hopeful. I'm also going to try to get out on the lake too, the water is cooling down and it's about time for the largemouth fishing to get awesome.
I was going to go out tomorrow (took off work for it) but apparently I still suck at checking the weather. Looks to be thunderstorms for the morn and I'm to understand that it is worthless to hunt at that time.
I have a good feeling about tomorrow night. After 36 straight hours of rain the deer should definately be on their feet. If not hopefully saturday morning will bring our coldest temps so far this fall.
