So it hasn't happened yet but it is possible. We have patterned a very big buck that uses our property as a travel corridor between bedding areas. We just got over 50 trail cam pics of this bad boy in a week span (only 8 taken within barely legal shooting light...however we know his pattern and if he sticks to it like last year, he'll start cruising mid day between the three heavy bedding areas. The dilemma is this...we have a neighboring property which, no joke, is maybe 3 acres worth of woods (directly to our northern border) and will have a shotgun hunter up the tree here soon a mere 18 yards from our border and facing our property!

Now while Bow, named him that because of his bowed browtine, uses our property usually...we have pictures of him heading along the northern border of ours which would be within range but not legal for that hunter to shoot.

It's gets more interesting in that we have permission to hunt this tiny 3 acres, even have a stand on a part of it...however we've never given the hunters on it permission to hunt ours. How in the world can we make sure no shooting happens onto our property without causing problems or scaring deer movement right off our property? Anyone have a similar situation?

We just don't want another hunter to enjoy the spoils of our countless hours and money making food plots, hinge cuts, legal mineral licks and trail routing....just to walk into the woods in his jeans and flannel red jacket chewing on some skohl and bam.

Here's some pictures of the buck we're trying to protect and get my dad on, as I'm already buck tagged out:

Not the best as it's the only one I uploaded on to my phone and then onto work computer:
    Bow latest.jpg
He's a 4x5 only because his right front main beam broke right after his G4...he also has split brow on his right side.

I guess this was merely a venting session :D In all honesty we've all probably been here, just gotta try to out smart the buck before the neighbor's get a crack at him...

Yeah I know...property is just hard to get into hunt a lot due to so many bedding areas around us. I wish I had some of the better pics of this guy, that picture doesn't do him justice. He's a brute and would blow my dad's biggest out of the water (shoot he's only take two bucks ever)! Good luck to everyone else in similar spot!

I am having a similar problem with neighbors shooting into our field from their timber, I just haven't been able to catch them yet. What I am going to do is plant a bunch of red cedars all along the property line to screen them from shooting onto my land.

The thought of a screen either through hinge cutting or plantings is getting quite high on our list of possibles.

Understand what you are talking about. Not much you can really do. I've always been superstitious and believe that if you have put the time/money in that it will come back to you. Mostly the time factor. Just my thoughts. Doesn't mean that the gun hunter won't get a shot too. Good luck getting your dad on the buck.

    Thats not your deer.

He can shoot it if he wants (as long as its on his property he can hunt).

Do you know for a fact hes a skoal chewing bum?

    I agree.

If the OP is that worried, throw a trail cam or a few in the area where the gun hunter will be.

Nobody is debating the legality of it, but it is frustrating to have a year-round QDM plan and to be watching a buck grow that you want so bad, and put so much effort into harvesting him.....just to have some guy that hunts one weekend a year come in and blow it away with a gun. Yes he has every legal right to that deer, but did he deserve the trophy as much as you would have? Not in my opinion. Every situation is different but with me, I have neighbors that walk in for one week a year during gun season in jeans and a camo coat without any regard for disturbing deer or scent control, and shoot deer off of our property that I have been trying the manage for the other 51 weeks. You would have to patience of a saint if that didn't bother you even a little. And when I approach them about QDM strategies, that just laugh and say there is plenty of deer to go around. This is my experience and I'm sure many others have had similar. That's why I am just going to put up a wall of red cedars so at least they have to shoot them off of their own property.

haha yeah I know it's not our deer, if he shoots it legaly believe me I'd congratulate him. We're actually on great terms with him as a person for sure. And yes, he's a skoal chewing dude...offered a dip on a couple occasions.

So your saying that your jealous he might shoot "your" deer?

Or that you deserve it more?

What does time into it have anything to do with anything? If he goes hunting and kills it, then he went hunting and killed it, without putting any time in. More power to him. Did you enjoy putting that time in? Cuz if you did, then thats the reward.

I know you're not saying this and I'm just busting your balls a little:
If you're so worried about someone else shooting your deer, maybe you should just high fence your property. lol

    But seriously:
Being someone that doesn't own any of his own private land, if I find a public spot that butts up against some private hunting ground, you better believe I'm going to have my butt in a stand there. I still put time into scouting the off-season and sitting during the season, but I get all the benefits of the time the guy put into the private land.

As an aside, some people think QDM means raising trophy bucks you get to kill and that's missing the point in my opinion. The intent is to sustain a healthy environment and a high quality herd that fits the carrying capacity of your land.

You should tell the dipper that if he sees it, to shoot the thing. That it's an old deer and needs to die regardless of who gets on it. That might sound like a horrible idea and leave a bitter taste in your mouth, but imagine how you'd feel if you never saw him again cause an 18-wheeler ran him over instead. Maybe tell him you'll even help him drag the thing out while you're at it.

Nope...you shoot on to my property (well my dad's) and that my friend is illegal. Like I said before he shoots legally I'll be the first to want to come see it and congratulate him...he's just illuded to wanting permission to shoot onto our property and my father/I have simply said no politely.
