It may be just a local deal for me.. But here in S. Indiana I am seeing about half the activity I was getting last year on my cams. I figured it might have to do with population on my properties or the wet weather and cool summer, but after talking to several others in my area they confirm that overall pictures/numbers are down along with big bucks sightings.. This past weekend I did a little night time inventory on some of the bean fields and was surprised to see deer numbers like I always do. I hope this is just one of those years where they don't need the minerals.
Every year varies for me. 2 years ago I had 3000 pictures a week which I thought was a ridiculous amount. Last year I would get about 200 per week. 1 buck all summer/early fall. This year I'm getting about 400 per week. No idea what makes the difference besides the population itself.
bone head hunter i dont think this applys to you but if you think you are getting less pics of deer try not to pressure the deer to much dont put cameras deep in the woods and then go check them twice a week. as far as less deer this year i cant tell a differance lol it seems like this topic is brought up a lot tho, at least every year
I've seen that mentioned on a couple of the Indiana hunting forums I read. I haven't really noticed fewer pictures, but I have only seen one buck on camera since May. I had a couple that were regulars last summer, but I went close to two months without a buck showing up on the trail cam this year.
I just started out in the game but the first week I had 146 then 62 or something like that. Last check was only 3 pics. I have a feeling my issue is my weekly visits to pull the card so its been sitting a week and a half so far and I'm not gonna pull it again till next weekend.
I really haven't noticed any less deer activity compared to other years. The only difference I have seen is that I am getting almost all bucks and not very many does. This concerns me because I know as the year progresses, the bucks travel patterns will change and the bucks I'm seeing now won't be there. Whereas the does will pretty much be on the same pattern. I havent noticed really althought this is my first FULL year of runnin cams. Some pulls are low some are high. im thinkin it has to do with the weird changes in weather were having. One week is almost 90 degrees everyday then the next its torrential down pouring. The past week or so has had some cool mornings an a nice chill breeze at night, which are the times im gettin almost all my pics on one property. The other i have a cam set up at the bottom of their bedding trail, an needless to say it dont matter what is goin on that thing is loaded every pull. Off-topic As pastorjim said bucks will be movin their patterns come fall, odd question but when exactly do you think they'll start finding their way to new areas? An Im not 100% sure but dont some bucks stay in one area a.k.a. resident bucks or is that a myth? Im just prayin that the big guy i got my eye on is gonna stick around. 3 bucks vs 15+ does on 50 acres (from what ive seen that is) seems to me that atleast one of em is gonna stick around.
I've noticed the completely opposite in my neck of the woods. I've had my cameras out (6) since middle of May, and have consistently gotten a good amount of pictures, including bucks. More does seem to be around and I've noticed more bucks as well, and bachelor groups. Not saying its better then previous years, but I have noticed its not any worse either.
I've had one cam do good several bucks and does my other cam had a spider housed in the lens and didn't take any pics I just now put some monster raxx out and put another cam out hope they like it.
