I can't help it, next to bowhunting whitetails and calling in turkeys........one of my favorite things to do is relax in a big alfalfa field with views of rolling hills, and glass for groundhogs. Unfortunately I don't get to hunt them as often as I used to when I lived in PA due to time and lack of prime ground for it here in NY. When I get down to my camp in PA though, the chucks within a few miles of camp are always in danger of getting clobbered by a 50 grain v-max out of nowhere.

I'm up to 7 of them now this year, (nothing compared to the dozens I used to kill every year) and it seems they just keep coming back and taking over the same empty holes week after week. I've shot 3x hogs out of one specific hole this year infact, all within about a 6 week timeframe. They have this hole on the edge of my one plot directly in front of camp 318 yards from the front door, and just keep coming back for more. :d Last time I was down at camp I spotted one at my Aunt's house down the road a bit, went to camp to get the .223, crawled within 100 yards of him and waited for him to stand. Whacked him and when the gun went off another one I never knew was there stood up next to him. I let him have it too for my first double in a few years. :ninja:

Anyone else enjoy shooting groundhogs? Am I the only one?

A couple of this years hogs next to my Savage 10FP in .223. The second pic shows the view from next to my campfire pit to the clover plot they love so much (the mowed area).

We have tooooo many coyotes around here. Not many groundhogs left. The only ones you see any more live in and around buildings close to people.

My dad used to pay me $5 a piece to shoot them on his farm, back when there were lots of em. That was fun sneaking up on em with a 22.

Heh.....sounds familiar John. I grew up as a kid on a horse farm, and nothing is worse than groundhog holes in the horse pastures. Horses break their legs in them and usually have to be put down. Dad used to turn me loose with the .22 Hornet with a fixed 4 Leupold on it and pay me for each hog I shot as well. :d I must have killed hundreds of them and it just never gets old for me.
