As a history buff I'm pretty fascinated by this movie. Even going to take the wife out to dinner and then to this movie Saturday night. (my first pick in like 3 years) Anyone else think they might see it? Or am I the lonely history nerd? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSvG_gk2mZU
I definitely want to see it... Don't know if I'll go to the cinema... but it will be on the list for sure.
Nope, I'm a history guy myself as well Mike. Might have to take the little lady out and see this movie too. Thanks for the heads up.
I watched a good show a couple nights ago on the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. The US actually hung the first woman in it's history as a result of the investigation that took place after Lincoln's death.
I'm really interested in if they are going to be tying the Roman Catholic church into the story. Since that's a huge part of this conspiracy. The hung woman was Mary Surrate (sp?) VS.. she was the mom of the only assassin who got away and interestingly enough became a guard for the papacy at the Vatican. Didn't know she was the first to be hung though. Either way.. it looks like a strong cast and I can't remember ever not liking a Robert Redford film. I'll give my review after Saturday night.. looks like I was able to convince the wife that its finally my pick again.
"The hung woman was Mary Surrate (sp?) VS.. she was the mom of the only assassin who got away and interestingly enough became a guard for the papacy at the Vatican. Didn't know she was the first to be hung though." Yes, her son fled the US and was eventually apprehended abroad. He came back and was put on trial, yet was cleared. Ms. Surratt however was hung in front of decent crowd. The crowd was in a blood frenzy before the hanging, but as the hanging became close to be administered the people became very uneasy about executing her. Right before her execution one of the other people that was being executed yelled out, "Ms. Surratt is not guilty..." or something to that effect and the crowd became increasingly uncomfortable with hanging a female. However, she was hung and let hang for 30 minutes until they were are legally declared dead.
i love history, just not in this setting. rather get mines from discovery or a book. i usually hit the theather to escape reality or travel to some place i've never been. looks good though!
I cant wait to see it, Lincoln had the hat shot off his head while riding his horse one day and still would travel without protection, guess some guys never learn. My hope is that the movie follows the facts and not just theories from 150 years of lost info.
My verdict for the 6 or 7 of us who also follow history. The movie was great IMO. Although I could see how some critics would not like it.. for unlike most historical movies which are highly Hollywood-ized to make the sale this one actually followed history quite well. And.. like I was hoping it would.. dabbled into the involvement of the Roman Catholic church just a touch. I usually rate movies by time.. since I can't last more than 45 minutes in a theater if I'm bored. The 2 hour and 20 minute movie seemed like FAR less than that. Which means I was interested the entire time. My wife.. who generally is bored by history enjoyed it too.. even going so far as to ask me a few Q's on that era on our way home. So.. if you enjoy history without Hollywood ruining it.. it's good. I really enjoyed it. Best movie I've seen from Hollywood in a while. Kudos to Mr. Redford again.
