Terrible first goal given away... but USA has been the aggressor ever since... Won't be long before an attack actually scores the way it's been going.

That extra 4 mins of stopage time was a killer. Hopefully Portugal beats ghana.

And THAT folks is how the game is played!
What determination and a great score (too bad it was against us though). Oh well... now we gotta' regroup and take on Germany.

It was 5 minutes, if it was 4 like they originally said that goal wouldn't have happened.

5 minutes of stoppage is a scam.

Just like the game against Ghana they did 5 minutes of stoppage.

    We had that game.

    I hate soccer.

Awesome game. That was more exciting than any NFL game I watched last year.

    Man...what an amazing match.

Frustrating and heartbreaking as hell, but an amazing match as well. I don't see how anyone can say that was boring.

The most exciting 90 minutes in 2014.

The US played one hell of a game but it was tough to see that late goal. They still have the advantage going forward but will have to play just as well, maybe even better, against Germany.

I'm very happy with the showing the US has made in this world cup. The last one was a disaster.

Still being in the "group of death" and likely coming out when the returning champions (Spain) and England have already been sent home, well it just goes to show you the sport is growing in this country and we aren't the suck team most Americans just assumed we are.

I was talking to a friend in Brazil last night, he said there are 90k USA fans in the country. That is by far the most fans outside the host nation.

It's hard to think of last night's result as positive, but we're still in a fanstatic spot to go through.

Can anyone explain the possible scenarios as to how the US does and does not advance.

We advance with a win or tie or a tie between ghana and Portugal. If portugal wins they have to win by a lot to make up the goal differential. I believe the have to win by 4 or 5 goals. Ghana would have to win by 3 goals to eliminate us.

We have a really good chance of advancing!

Best case scenario is a tie between Portugal and Ghana so we advance win lose or draw.

I say we shock everyone and upset Germany Thursday though. We have already beaten them twice after all, 1918 and 1945.

Ghana or Portugal would have to win by a lot assuming we don't get blown out by Germany.

I think the US will still be safe if they lose to Germany by 1.

How would that work? The USA has +1 and Ghana has -1. Wouldnt the US win the tie breaker since they beat Ghana?

the next tiebreaker after points is goal differential, then goals scored

head to head is way down the line
