I am looking to buy a new Subaru Outback. Does anyone have any experience with them? All I have heard has been good.
I put about 80K miles on an Impreza WRX several years ago, and my wife now has about 90k miles on her Impreza. Both have been really good vehicles for us. My sister put 140k miles on a 97' Outback and has about 120k miles on her current 04' Outback, and both were really reliable vehicles for her as well.
Parents owned a 1998 and put 140K+ on it not a single problem. Bought a 2003, and did the same, and now have a 2011, and they're happy so far. My sister owned a 92 Legacy Sedan that she sold withe 120K on it, and it is currently driven by one of my uncles with over 200K (and he doesn't maintain vehicles well), and it's still going well. My other uncle got almost 300K out of his 96 Legacy station wagon with not a single car wash from purchase date of 1999 until when he retired it this year (bought my parents 2003). It wasn't in great cosmetic shape, but it ran solid still.
My wife drives a 2010 Outback and I drive a 2009 Forester. Fantastic cars. Two friends bought Foresters on my recommendation and have been very happy with them.
Turns out the salesman was a member of a former church where I served as Youth Minister and a pastor. He said he will get me a really good deal? We'll see what happens but that sounds nice. Should I get the 4 or 6 cylinder? The 4 seemed to have power to spare but we are flat-landers here in Montgomery.
Get the 4 cylinder, it has plenty of power and the gas mileage is great ( 26+ to and from work ). A religious car salesman? Don't believe anything he says, keep two hands on your wallet and read every document twice.
I laughed. My wife drives a 03 Forester. It has 140,000 miles with no major issues. She wants a new one, but I figure we'll just wait until it dies. Decent amount of room for a wagon. I've put deer in it before. It also handles well in the snow for a small vehicle, which I'm sure is high on the list for an Alabamian.
You are more right than you know. I have had a belly full of "religious" lawyers over the past couple years. I'm sure glad it isn't religion that saves. Thanks for the info... you always seem to have a word of wisdom.
Yes, I understand why... Hauling a deer in it would probably get me placed on death row. Our very infrequent snow is usually in the mountains while on vacation
Back when gas was expected to rise significantly over the summer I was starting to research the Outlback as a potential replacement for one of our vehicles (that gets less mileage) - but ended up to just keep our current vehicles (truck and SUV) for now - most things I could find on them was really good though... A guy at work has one and he says it's been rock solid - loves it...
And from the bad decisions of others. One of my favorite quotes is: "A wise man learns far more from the fool than the fool ever learns from a wise man."
My oldest son has an '02 Outback Legacy that just blew the engine yesterday. He was on his way home from a bike race in Des Moines and it started making a racket and just died. In fact, I just found out from the shop this morning that it was toast. Sounds like it threw a rod. They dont recommend fixing it, so we are car shopping Thursday. He definitely wants another Outback. We have actually had to put a ton of money into this car in just a years time. New head gaskets, brakes, tuneup including coil, etc. We bought a Subaru because of their great reputation, but unfortunately, we got a lemon. I really am not worried about buying another one, I think we just got unlucky this time. We have found him a '09 Outback with 32K miles on it and an extended warranty that we will likely get. Nice timing for him, as he graduates on Sunday.
I found a used 2005 one owner Outback with 92K miles. 4 cyl, manual tran, looks to be in real good shape but I know, timing belt, hub lube and new tires are a near immediate expense. I am thinking that will total between 12 and 1500$. Asking price is 8500, I am thinking 7250. Any feedback, words of wisdom?
Muzzy....curious...did you end up getting it? I've decided if I can find a deal my next purchase is going to be a Subaru of some kind due to AWD offerings, amazing reports/reviews and longevity it would seem. Outback or the Impreza Hatch would yeild themselves best as a back up hauler for hunting to my now old high mileage F-150 that I'll keep when I do upgrade (next spring most likely).
What a bump...and I got excited when I saw Vito for a second there before I realized this was from 3 years ago
