Thanks for all the replies. yes i know its a bad habit. But sitting there hours on end it just gives me something to do, get the edge off etc... Im still on the fence about the scent away stuff.

i saw a article about them testing the scent away verses not using it with a drug sniffing dog. The dog found the
guy with the scent away just as fast., So im 50 / 50 on the scent stuff... I dont know...

I have had both does and bucks come in and lick the area that I was spitting in.
But I also had a mature doe come in and stop smell the area and ran off like a bat out of hell. she did not see me or hear me cause I did not move. She just smelled the area and took off. I use scent spray and a base layer but thats it for scent elimination stuff. the wind is my buddy during season. But just remember they can always come from anywhere at anytime.

like i mentioned in the pee off the stand thread, i dip and spit the whole time, and one time spit down on a spikes head as he stood where i has just pee'd. i'm sure there's merit to scent control, but think a lot of it is marketing.

I say if you are going to dip on stand, be a man and swallow your spit!

So i guess smoking a cigar in the stand would be a no-no also:)

    Wish I could though.

I think this discussion is more complex and subjective than we say. For example, how does a deer come to conclusion that a certain smell, one they probably never smelled before, is associated with a human being? Human scent itself I can see, because well, we're predators and smell like one to a deer. The same for coyotes, bobcats, bears, mountain lions, etc. But snuff spit, for example, doesn't smell like a predator.

Then of course you add to the equation that each deer is different and interprets things completely opposite of the next deer. I'm willing to say that some deer are more paranoid than others and will turn inside out at anything new or out of the norm they encounter, while others, will be curious and even investigate a smell further.

I think about the only thing most of us can agree on that we can not fool a deers nose. Meaning that there is no product on the market that can eliminate all odor we carry into the woods with us. Minimize, yes, eliminate, no.

I finally kicked the addiction this year, but when I did chew on stand I never had a negative affect I could see.
I always spit right on the ground and had deer get curious about it, or not even think about it.
Once I was chewing on stand, when a fawn came up and started licking my spit (skoal peach I believe it was) and I had thrown my dip out into the trail (which I regretted for a while and couldnt figure out why I would do such a thing) when a doe came up got to the used up dip and licked it up. Then I shot her.

The potential of experiencing something like the picture below prompted me to quit chewing in any fashion several years ago.

Sean, you are experiencing what most of us who have dipped/chewed have while trying to quit. A couple of years ago we had a long thread on here that encouraged each other to quit chew, dip, and cigarettes. Many people on here gave it a serious go and really did quit. I also know that at least one person on here had issued with their mouth/jaw from dipping and it involved surgery. You have our support and you can rely on us to motivate you if need be. Best of luck and get it done!

Quiting sucks big time. I was done for about 2 weeks and the wife and I had a fight because I become a major ****. Well started chewing again. But I will do anything not to chew in the stand this year. I hope to be done with this nasty habit by October 1st. I need your support guys. Check in on me every so often if you would. Id really appreciate that.

Thanks the wife absolutely hates it and I'm getting tired of it. Just need to put my all into it and not look back. With the money I spend a year I could go buy a Colorado elk tag and hunting license plus some of the gas easily. Pathetic.

I used to dip in the stand because I was a smoker and didn't want to smoke in the stand. It didn't seem to have any effect on the deer as many came within 20 yards of me. I have since quit smoking cigarettes and have been using an electronic cigarette in it's place. I've been using one for about 4 months, and any desire I have to smoke is quenched when I use the e-cig for a few puffs. I plan on using the e-cig in the woods on an as needed basis(I rarely need it, but sitting in the woods for hours might cause me to desire a smoke).

Ive been hitting up the local gas station every opening morning for a can of skoal apple for 3 years now. Chew nothing but griz green the rest of the year but just something about being out there and havin that apple taste in my mouth puts me right where i need to be! Just tradition i suppose

My brother's gums are receding because he has been dipping so long.

Myself, I tried it several years ago at a cousin's house. Thought I was a big shot...thought I could keep a dip in and drink at the same time. Did not work out so well. I was hugging the porcelain all night and sick as a dog. Haven't tried it since. Nasty habit IMO.
