This will be my first season Bowhunting, I have a bad habit of dipping... Now with all this sent blocker stuff and
so forth , Will the smell of my mint dip ruin things for me???

I did last season and I probably wont this season. If I do it will be a minimum and I will also use a bottle to spit in as I did last seaon. I want to have a better season then I didi last and I also have a much stricter scent plan in place for this year as well.

I do it once in awhile. It really just depends on how picky I'm being. Sometimes I just leave it in the truck and sit in the stand pissed at myself for doing that..lol

I always see more deer when I dip lol.... Grizzly Wintergreen long cut!! Works every time!... Infact one day I was leaving the woods and spit my dip out on the ground and the next day I went out to find fresh deer tracks coming right up to it!!! SO I have always done it... Granted they twich and jerk durring the summer when they are going through withdraw... but no big deal!

I chew a can of kodiak everyday for the last 8 years however when in the stand I switch to skoal apple blend. I don't like it but it's a mental thing I guess never seems to affect them though.

I think deer are a bit curious of new smells in the woods. My father is a heavy smoker and he smokes when he hunts and shoots nice bucks too. He's even had them walk right up to him with there nose in the air. Curious little boogers.

I do and have usually always just spit on the ground. Last year, I started using a bottle to spit in and put my old dips in and I noticed something. My stands don't burn out as quickly. I'm not saying its the only reason, but it really has me wondering a bit about it.

I'm trying to kick the habit all together though. It's been a difficult trip to say the least.

I have a few times but always made sure to spit in a bottle and not on the ground. Sure I will do the same this year.

I used to chew. I recommend that you not. But, if you have to use a bottle to spit in.

I throw a dip in every time I get in my treestand. Never had a problem with it. I just spit on the ground and don't worry about bringing a spitter when you have an entire forest. I've also heard guys say they've shot deer while smoking. In all honesty I think the scent thing is blown slightly out of control and a large part of hunting is luck. I agree with playing the wind and trying to remain scent free with spray, laundry detergent and all that but I doubt a few drips of skoal mint are going to ruin my chances.

This is an interesting conversation. For those that say it has never been a problem, I have two questions...

    1) Do you were scent eliminating clothing, or use scent eliminating sprays?

    2) How do you know its never been a problem? Would you know if a deer winded you as a result of the chew if it was never in sight? How often have you had deer come in down wind and not been bothered?

I guess that was more than two. I know a guy that shot his first deer, with a bow, from the ground, while wearing jeans and a white t-shirt. Can I assume we don't need treestands and camo?

I'd say that's a fair assumption. Technically you don't need treestands and camo. You could, and I know people who have shot deer out of their bedroom windows wearing boxers. I'd say spitting dip (for me) hasn't been an issue because I've still killed deer and once again (on a personal level) i'm happy with my kill rate. It is good for me however it might not be for somebody else.

Interesting. My buddy's first deer with a bow came without camo and while still hunting. He might have even been smoking if I remember correctly. I'll have to verify that. Back to your quote...I would still consider hunting from the house as using a blind. I do like the fact that no clothing, other than boxers, were worn. Perhaps next time they can step into the yard before making the shot? That would be more conclusive.

Also, if said hunter(s) has a wife or girlfriend, what were they wearing in bed? This is very important.

My point was simply that anybody at any given time could be out hunting in a neon yellow banana suit while carrying a boom box blaring music and using a Nerf pro series children over 5 archery series with suction cup broadheads. We buy the products we do (camo, scent block, treestands, fast bows, and all that stuff) because we want to better our odds at harvesting said animal. Now if we go back to the original topic of the post, I will still stand behind my dipping from the treestand outlook because I'm happy with the kill rate that works for me. It might not be what somebody else desires and that may be why he/she chooses to not dip or chew. I choose to wear camouflage, use scent control spray, climb up 20' in a tree and not carry a boombox because those are all things that lead me to the kill rate I am happy with. Dipping or spitting does not specifically factor in for me. It is different for everybody.
