Just started demolishing our master bath this week. We noticed a "musty" smell a month or so ago so I decided to tear the bathroom apart and find the source. I found a couple areas of water damage. Looks like some of our T1-11 siding is also damaged. This could be a bigger job than I thought. So far I've removed the fiberglass shower stall, sink/vanity, toilet, and the particle board/linoleum that covered the subfloor. I've yet to tear down the wall that separates the sink area from the shower/toilet area. We want to open the room up as much as we can. The plan is to create a much bigger (tiled) shower and update basically everything else. I've never tiled a shower before but have done the research and have a pretty good grasp on what needs to be done to ensure a leakproof shower. Do you guys have much experience in this department? I don't want a prefab pan. I plan on pouring a mortar bed and building it up from there. Once completed, I'll post up one of my signature DIY threads with plenty of pics. I hate that there is a possibility of water damage inside our walls but I'm glad I have a project to do. Hardwood floors are next on the list. I should be busy until summer.
I didn't do the tiled shower, but did do everything else a little over a year ago. I put in all new drywall(moisture resistant), new tub/shower combo, new toilet/tank, and placed a ceramic tile floor after replacing some subfloor. First time I ever did ceramic tile. Time consuming but well worth it and it looks great.
I recently did mine too. Gutted it down to nothing and started over. New sheetrock, celing fan/light, outlets, sink, vanity, toilet, shower, medicine cabinet, light fixture above sink, ceramic tile. Didn't do any tile in or around shower though.
Haven't don any of my bathrooms yet (saving that for last on the monstrous list I'm checking off). I won't be tiling the shower, or walls, but I'll be looking forward to the pictures. If you're tiling in the showing, and will be doing lots of varying cuts (for accent strips, contrast areas, etc.), invest in a good wet saw:D Where is the water damage?
Donnie, I have done plenty of them .. in my opinion, do a complete tear out ....it will save you tons of time and give you peace of mind.... if there is any questionable thing, total tear down ... tiling is a piece of cake
I want to keep an eye on this as probably my next project is redoing my upstairs bathroom, since I can take as long as I want on it. And it BADLY needs updated.
My wife and I are re-doing the tiling in our upstairs hall bathroom (shower). I knew a little bit but we just got back from a workshop at Home Depot that was free. The one at our location is every weekend. They cover floor tiling, shower/bath and back splashes. It might be worth a shot once you get to that point. It turned out to be beneficial for us moving forward. You might want to call and see if there's one specifically on bathroom remodeling.
The water damage I spoke of was behind the sink/vanity. In the pic below, the discolored area is actually my exterior siding, T1-11. Couple things here...its slightly damaged but still structurally intact. I'm not so sure its a plumbing problem as previously thought. It could be really old before I replaced my roof (water running down vent pipe is a possibility) or a current problem. We're supposed to get some rain and snow over the weekend, I'll monitor this location throughout. Really need a "soaking rain" to check though. That 1.25" hole I drilled in the subfloor did not have any stories to tell. Could not see anymore damage below but I may cut a bigger hole to investigate. I also found some mouse droppings and wonder if the water damage is old and the musty smell is due to mice. I don't know yet. We've heard some commotion in our walls at night so its a possibility. I have no clue how the hell they get in either. I'll address this problem in the near future. Went up in the attic to check said vent pipe to see if it had been leaking down the pipe. It has not. Outside of the siding is intact and I can't find where water could enter. Discovered that our hallway bathroom's vent fan is not vented to the outside. The previous owner or initial contractor just decided to vent it into the attic. Well, dug through some insulation and discovered the back flap valve was closed and buried in "blown in" insulation anyway. Idiots! I'll solve this problem when I install a new vent into my master bath. It currently does not even have one. I may get one of the dual vent fans that can be placed in a remote location that can vent two different locations. I've done some tiling before and have a little experience. Never done any vertical tiling so it should be fun. Here is a link to the method I'll employ to construct my shower pan. If done correctly, there should be no leaks. Only thing with my bathroom is a window that may be incorporated within the shower area. http://www.ontariotile.com/preslope.html This is the wall that I'll remove. You can see in this pic the shower has been removed. This is also where the toilet is located (other side of the shower wall that you barely can see). See the water damage to the left of the sink drain pipe? Still not entirely sure what the cause is...maybe its old. More to come....wish me luck!
Btw....I'm working with about 66 sq ft. I really hope these pictures make my current bathroom look terrible...it is. Hopefully, I'll be able to show you guys an awesome transformation.
Here's mine a complete gut and redo. I had a shower stall origanally in there, moved the toilet over 3" to make the tub fit. Turned out nice, I have a glass door on the tub now.Finished in about a month ago.
