I may have scored a little 80 acre spot near Amasa in Iron Co. It backs up to a swamp, with a stream, and some nice timber. Looks very interesting.
How has the hunting been? Good populations? Big bucks?
Any info would be helpful, thanks.

There are some really good bucks in the U.P. It is just a matter of being able to find them. There is just a ton a forest up there. You from MI?

I gun hunt not to far from there. In my area deer are spotty. No deer in some areas and good amount in other areas, it's due to the wolves. Hope your in a good area.

Nope, from Illinois, but I do alot of ATV'ing and fishing up there. It's big woods, but actually don't see a huge amount of deer, and never anything very big. I'm sure there are some nice bucks though.
It's different from the areas I hunt and would love to try it, very remote.

Iron county has big deer, but their numbers are low. Now with changes in timbering practices its even harder to find deer there. Look for 0-4 year old clear cuts, that is like a corn feild where your from. After a clear cut is 5 years old it turns into a bedding area. One thing you will find in any clear cut anywhere in the country, if there are trees that were left in the cut they will be good stand sights thru the life of the regrowth. All critters, deer, bear , moose, yotes, wolves, ect will meander by these trees. Swamps are also good places to hunt in the U.P., just understand that in a cedar swamp the wind is never as it seems walking into it, the winds swirl, and change directions as they float thru lay of the land. The U.P. is an awesome chunck of land that has been looked over by development, and I hope it stays that way! By the way dont stay on those 80 acres if there isnt deer sign, you can hunt anywhere there isnt a sign. About 95% of the U.P. is public land

Great info, thanks alot for the input. There is about a 10 acre clearcut on the property that I was already thinking about hunting.
I saw some sign, not much, but only saw half of the property.

The owner is a trapper, and takes lots of bobcats, yotes, beavers, etc..., but says he sees plenty of deer.
I gotta get up there soon to do a serious scouting session.
