I measured the distance I ran in 17:30 the other day. It came to be exactly 2 miles long. I ran it again today in 17:10. I thought I did a lot better but only bettered my first time by 20 seconds. I will run it again in a few days.
You'd do yourself more good, Brett.....if you ran slower.....but more. :D I'm looking forward to doing a stand-alone 5K, sometime. I've never done it. Doing 10mi. in the AM. But, they'll be S L O W.
Listening to this I'm just plain fat. 205lbs at 6'-0". I'm 33 years old and was very very atheletic until I a got married and started working for a living. Now, I "bust my ass" for 9-12 hours a day behind a computer desk, go home and try to relieve my wife from our 3 month old and 3 year old. By the time that is done..... I'm ready for bed. (But somehow still don't get to bed till 11pm at night. This lifestyle has taken it's tole on my body. I need to get more toned..... get rid of this gut and get down to 190. (After the kids get older)
Didn't do the 10mi'er this AM. Did 11, instead. Just felt good. What's the over/under on Ferg's run split? I'm not feeling good for him.
Impressive Jeff. Prior to me running here recently I walked for 45-60 minutes with a 25 pound weight in my backpack for weeks. I just wanted to load my muscles prior to undertaking any running due to joint concerns. I have a specific conditioning level I need to attain here in the next couple of months, and one of them is being in good shape for a timed 1.5 mile run. I guess I could add in some longer distance runs but dang it Jeff, they are boring as all hell to me. I also did a few sets of push-ups last night and hit 30 in a row. For me that is pretty good, because I have never been a big push up guy because the skill is boring to me. My goal is to do 50 push-ups in a row by the end of August.
Running IS boring, until you get to a certain point (volume)....and it becomes easier. I promise -------it does. That point came, for me, at about 20-25mi./wk. I enjoy everything but getting ready to go out the door. I cannot imagine your time you ran the other night NOT "qualifying" you.
Brad I was in the same boat. Except I am 5'9" and had gotten up to 234 , I was tired of the weight so 15 weeks ago I started doing cardio 6 days a weeks, lifting weights 5 days a week and completely changed the way I eat. As of this morning I was 204, and I have had so much more energy since I got going. It can be done!
Agree to an extent, VS, and I even ran XC in high school. When I was competing against not only myself, but also others, it made running a challenge. Constantly trying to beat my PR time's, and trying to move up on the ladder of guys on the team (I never moved higher than number 3-4 on the team, and those top guys were consistently running mid to low 16:00 5ks). Now running for recreation with nothing other than cardiovascular health as my motivation, it's not as fun. It does work well, though Heck, I ran 3.4 miles today at about a 7.5 minute pace. For me, that's good enough for now. Remember, all the working out your doing is great. Little steps are better than nothing at all.
Anybody tracking Ferg on the Ironman site? He's on the last leg (run). Looks like he had his swim time range just about pegged.
MGH, for the majority of my athletic career I was trained much different than an XC runner. I trained for short bursts of action over a duration of time until I was 23. After that I opened up a bit in the wrestling world became more of a well rounded athlete in terms of conditioning. The problem that I am having these days is that my body always starts responding to vigorous exercise the same...its start to pack on muscle and my appetite balloons. The one good thing I have going for me is that I am have always been highly adaptable physically. My main concern these days is not hurting any of my joints and that is why I am very hesitant to increase my running load any more than 2 miles, 2 to 3 times a week. I had two ACL reconstructions and one medial meniscus repair so I am trying to do what I can without risking any injury. I have a mountain bike I am going to start using to supplement my running. I need my heartrate up high at least 3 days a week.
I[m guessing those are his splits - within his age group (ranking amongst those in his age group - for each discipline). Don't know how many were in his age group. And, it doesn't matter. He finished! Congrats, Ferg. Can't wait to hear about it.
Well the day after and I am feeling much better then I thought I would be. The entire day was an experience. I awoke to a downpour. Setup in transition was a total mess and I ended up leaving everything in my bag as organized as possible. Unfortunitly for me transition closed almost 2 hours before my wave started so I had to get setup then stand around in the cold rain waiting. My swim went just as I planned. The only real tough part of the swim was the run up the beach in the deep, deep sand. I got more tired from that short run then I did from the swim! The bike route was rolling hills with lots of straight aways. Made for a nice ride on teh aero bars. My bike time was about 10 minutes faster then I figured it to be. And my run was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. For some reason my feet went numb during the bike ride and at the start of my run it took almost 5 miles before feeling came back to them. The run course had little to no shade on it and the sun was beating down the entire time. I ended up pretty much runnign a mile then walking one and repeating that till it was finally over. I was able to run the last .6 mile just to get in at 6:10:29 about 20 minutes better then I estimated I would do! And I can honestly say with it over now that I am already looking forward to my next one! I have a few more short tri's this season but plan to get in a few next year and start training for a full ironman the year after! Thanks for all the support from all of you! It was cool seeing that you were following me online during the day!
A friend of mine posted those numbers she said she got from the site but I am not able to find where she got those from yet. I am not sure either how many were in my AG either.
Hey...now that's it's over (and based on your IM comment)....I wanted to ask you... I've asked a lot of triathetes this question: Do you think "progressing" is going longer? Or, is it going faster? No wrong answer.
Congrats Ferg! Good job. Jeff, while not a triathlete, running has similar parallels. Personally I feel progress is going faster. But when dealing with situations where the opportunity to go longer at an event, its hard to argue against that also being progress. Especially when those distances start pushing the extremes of just finishing. But to me progress is taking a chosen distance going faster at it.
