    Good luck Ferg!

    VS,
That is some serious mileage! And with hills no less. I am cursed in that fashion too. Nothing but hills where I live and I have to end going up a steep one to my house. Its rough.

    Jeff,
All the workouts & activity you do, you have to eat like a horse. I've figured out for myself, there is a rough "band" of calories I can consume to lose weight. More and I don't lose, less and i don't lose either. I'm at ~170 right now and I think this is where I want to stay. I could probably squeak down to 167-165, but I'm not sure how long I could hold that, my body fat would be pretty low.

I never thought I'd say this....but I could easily see me at 180# (I once thought that would be too thin). At 190, I definitely see where I have it to lose.

I should really count up my calories for a day, sometime. It's probably scary. I know I'm over 500, today (before lunch). I bet I eat 3,000/day most days. Some days - more.

hey, don't worry about your time so much, in my eyes, completing a tri is a feat in and of itself, you should be proud just for making the finish line... Good Luck brotha!!!!

I've been training for a sprint distance tri myself, a long way to go though... hoping to be ready by june next year as long as my back holds up...

What's funny.....is Ferg's (if I read him right) concerned most with the run. That would be the least of MY concerns.

IMO, the bike is the heart of triathlons. And, swimming is the limiter to most triathletes.

Ferg will do FINE in those. They'd scare the CRAP outta me, at those distances....(and I couldn't complete the swim, currently). If you've never been 30-40-50mi. on a bike, you can't imagine what it takes out of you. I haven't sniffed 56mi., yet. I typically sleep an hour or two when I complete 30+.

WHATEVER his time, he'll have my respect. My bet is....he'll wanna RACE the next one he does. That'll be an entirely different undertaking, as well.

    Good luck, man!

ya, but its the swim part that KILLS me... i'm not a good swimmer and I need to get MUCH more comfy in the water before I jump in there with 2-300 other swimmers...

Find a pool swim tri.....or one that does a time trial start. They're out there. That's all I'm doing, this year (TT starts in a pool). Good way to (literally) get your feet wet.

    Good luck!

ya, i've thought about that, need a bit more condition on my bike legs and need to drop another 20-30lbs so i can take pressure off my knees/back (i have a herniated disc in the lumbar area) I really wanna be >190lbs before my first tri

Lets make it a sprint tri, in May.

    I'd put in $50.

    I'm shooting for <1:00 on 8/22 (250M/17K/5K).

Rybo I think you thought I said 17.5 miles...I said 17.5 MINUTES of running up and down hills. LOL. I did not measure it but I think it is around 1.5 miles or so. I am out of shape cardio wise because I was sick for nearly 6-7 weeks recently. I have never been much of a distance runner, just a sprinter. But I realize my heart health and weight loss need the longer distance runs. My goal by the end of the end of this month and do not laugh, is 1.5 miles in under 13 minutes. I will then re-evaluate.

    You won't catch me laughing.

I've only ran two races in my life. My best (of 2) 5K times is 27:28. Your pace is better than that.

Stand-alone, I have no idea what I can run 1.5mi. in. But, it's not gonna blow the doors off that number.

its pretty sad, back in highschool i used to use long distance running to train during the spring and summer for soccer in the fall... my best 10k time (25yrs ago and about 100lbs ago) was just a hair under 42 mins... in basic training our 2 mile run PT time had to be less than 15:56 (i did mine in 11:45)... now I don't know if I could run 1 mile in 11:45... ugh, getting old sucks (in a way)... my body is starting to lean more toward low/no impact activities, running is quickly leaving my vocabulary and biking/swimming is going to be more on the horizon as my 'go-to' exercises

    Stop running hard.
    Run slower (so you can)
    Run more
It will begin to get easier. It's just now getting easier. This will be my 1st 30mi. week.

    (Hooker's probably LOL....!)

ya, well, been there done that... to many years on astroturf playing soccer ruined my knees and weightlifting (with poor technique and no spotter) blew out my back... the rest of my body can handle it, knees aren't ~so~ bad, but back is another story, hafta get epidural cortisone about once every 10 months to keep myself upright...:(

GMMAT- the swim and bike won't be any problem. I have been a swimmer my entire life. Swam state in HS and swam in college. Currently doing .5 mile swims consistantly at 14:10 so that should put my time this weekend right around 31-33 minutes I am estimating! As for the bike I am not worried about that either. I often do 50-80 mile rides in the heat and hills. Just completed a 75 mile ride on Sunday in 94 degree heat with no problems! I am not a runner though so that is where my current worries are but like I said I am going into this without any real time goals just to finish I will have no problem with that. But would be nice to get a time in the low to mid 6 hours!

Exactly what I thought (no prob, on the swim or bike).

If I could swim.......I STILL WOULDN'T JOIN YOU!....lol. I've got all I can handle, currently.

    Give it hell.
